gather and processfirst-hand and secondary information on the basic pattern of the information transfer process in the following systems:
– land connected telephones
– mobile phones
– television
– radios
– Compact Disc players
to outline features that the systems have in common and use available evidence to discuss the applications of these system

I'm not sure how you would go about addressing the "process first hand information" bit, but as for the theory that should be covered, I think the dot point you're referring to closely relates to this one:

Identify the transformation of energy at each stage of information transfer in the following devices:
- Land connected telephones
- Mobile phones
- Television
- Radios
- Compact Disc players

The only real difference is that the dot point you're concerned with involves the information transfer process whereas the above refers to the transformation of energy.

To clarify, from the HSC online website:

The information transfer process refers to: code --> message --> transmission --> decoder

An energy transfer refers to moving from one form of energy, eg. electrical wires carrying electricity from a power station to your home

An energy transformation refers to changing a form of energy into another form, eg. electrical --> kinetic energy
So you should be looking at not what TYPES of energy are involve, but WHERE (for lack of better terminology) the energy is in each stage of the information transfer process.

Having said that, here's what I think you should be doing for each:

Land connected telephones

Sound → coded by microphone to electrical signals → transmitted through electrical cables → 3 options:

a) Optical fibres → electrical cables → speaker in receiver → decoded to sound
b) Microwave signals to satellite and back → electrical signal → speaker in receiver → decoded to sound
c) Speaker in receiver → Decoded to sound.

Mobile phones

Sound → coded in microphone → transmitted via microwaves from tower to tower → detected by receiving mobile → decoded → sound.

Television

Sound and light → coded by camera and microphone → transmitted through electricity cables → converted to radio waves and transmitted at transmitting tower → detected by aerial → decoded by TV → sound and light pattern.

Radios

Sound → coded by microphone → transmitted through electricity cables → converted to radio waves → detected by aerial → decoded by radio → sound.

Compact Disc players

Sound → coded by microphone → laser light → decoded by player → electrical → sound.

So what do they all have in common?

• They all involve energy transformations, coding of information, electric currents and decoding devices.
• They are electronic, that is, they require electricity.
• They are capable of transmitting information over long distances.

And the applications part is pretty self explanatory.

Hope that helps. :D
