This is interesting........ I never heard of The Group of Eight....

Group of Eight (Australian Universities)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Group of Eight is a lobby group for the tertiary institutions generally considered to be the most prestigious and reasearch-intensive universities in Australia. It is somewhat equivalent to the American Ivy League. All members of the group bar UNSW are "sandstone universities", and all of their primary campuses are based within an Australian capital city.

The Group of Eight (GO8) is comprised of:

University of Adelaide
Australian National University
University of Melbourne
Monash University
University of New South Wales
University of Queensland
University of Sydney
University of Western Australia
The group, in arguing for prioritisation of research funding and in lobbying for increased funding for the largest and most popular campuses, sometimes finds itself at odds with smaller, regional and rural unversities.

Anyway, has anyone heard of this term - Group Of Eight???
I heard of America's Ivy League, but never this.

"All members of the group bar UNSW are "sandstone universities"
ahahah it sounds like they are trying to offend the sandstone universities. do usyd and the others take offence to beign called a sandstone university?

additionally theres the
Australian Technology Network (ATN) in other words (We're bitter we didn't get go8 status, so we made our own little hardcore group)
which some universities that were sad that they didnt get selected in the go8 joined into.
uni of SA, UTS, queensland uni of Tech, and a few others

also the Innovative Research Universities Australia (IRU) in others words (Whoa, I never knew these universities actually existed..!)
flinders, griffith, la trobe, murdoch, few other ones

i can say for sure that Go8 exists, studying at Monash uni myself,
however, their definition was wrong- Monash is NOT a sandstone uni as it was recently formed, just like UNSW. Anyhows, not that bright, have you been to UWA personally? How can you dismiss it so easily?

Obviously leaving out UTS was just an oversight ;)

Actually, the Australian Technology Network has UTS, Queensland Tech and RMIT which are all pretty good universities.

RMIT - maybe people will confuse us with MIT, Boston and think we are actually a good university

It's a conspiracy I tell ya!
One of the unsw law lecturers told us during open day that the Go8 is "just as sinister as it sounds" :D

UTS may be a good teaching university but i dont think it has the research capabilties - which is hardly its fault.
UTS certainly does, but only in specialised fields (most particularly in IT, Science and Law). Take the Institute for Nanoscale Technology, in its partnership with CSIRO it is considered the leading Nanotechnology research organisation in the region.

i was guessing since it isnt a part of the Go8.

The reason why it lacks research is that it was as a uni only formed in the 1988 (i think)...hast had a enough time.

As for it becoming a Go8 member i doubt that the two biggies in nsw would allow it.

Well, UTS is in comparison too small and specialised, in some cases UNSW and USyd have faculties where UTS hasn't even a single course. Despite that, they're damn good at what they do. :)

obviously the Go8 isn't spending enough money on advertising. i remember getting serveral flyers outlining how great they were during high school....

wollongong, maquarie, etc... are close to Go8 but UTS is a while behind. It is more focused on industry rather than research (which isn't a bad thing).
