What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative research? Please give me some examples.

And also, if you're in the mood please list some advantages and disadvantages of each.

I need to study for a test, and there are two syllabus points on this. So urgent reply, please.

Qualitative: An Orange is orange.

Quantitative: An Orange has a pH of 5.

If it has numbers -> Quantitative

Based on what I know on those 2 terms,

Pros and cons of qualitative research:
-Takes a long time
-Note very reliable

+Gets more detail
+Adds validity

Pros and cons of quantitative research:
-Could be bias in studies
-Costly experiments

+Quick to gain results
+You can generalise findings

hmm...i don't think quantitative would be very bias. Qualitative would be more subjective as you may state that the orange appears "orange" in your findings, however someone else may say the orange looks "yellow-orange". However, if you were to measure the same orange (considering you did it accurately), you're results would be the same, thus objective.

I'm not to sure you have got these terms right. How does qualitative take a long time? And then quantitative be quick? It takes a lot longer to measure the wavelength of light from a orange to determine it's colour then it does to say "It's orange".
And why is there bias in quantitative? If anything it removes bias.

quantitive and qualitative are different, you can't compare them. They're used for different reasons.

Quantitive refers to amount i.e. how many heads you get when you flip a coin
Qualitative refers to feature i.e. colour change

i think we already established this in the first post...but what are the benefits and disadvantages of each?

No need to be rude, gosh.

And if they're different, how are there advantages and disadvantages?

It's like comparing a spoon and a fork and going LOL WICH 1 IZ BETA

They serve different purposes.

didn't mean to come of rude.

This is coming straight form the syllabus: "Outline the advantages and disadvantage of qualitative and quantitative research". You can't be saying BOS is wrong?

Advantages of quantitative:

allow judgements to be made based on scientific criterias and datas collected.

disadvantage:
quantitative measurements require use of highly-calibrated equipments which might be expensive/can only be done in research laboratories. time consuming.

e.g. (this is year 12 example so u might not get it) comparing analogous structures of animals create biases because u get to decide which two animals u can prepare. but u can quantitatively look at the evolutionary relationship by using dna-dna hybridisation/amino acid sequencing, which requires the use of many complex technologies to obtain the dna strands of the two species.

Qualitative advantage:
can be observed visibly and result is obtained quick and efficiently.
qualitative disadvantage:
not as accurate as quantitative data.

e.g. using indicator to identify colours vs using pH probe.

bad example but hope it helps. overall, quantitative data is just numbers collected while qualitative data is something that is recorded that can be observed by the naked eye.

Quantitative can be measured e.g. numerically.
qualitative can't- you can only describe it e.g. furry
