Does the marks that separate each rank in the school affect your overall HSC result? For example, say if 1st and 2nd second rank, were differentiated by 1 mark internally, but by 10 marks externally, will 2nd rank drag down 1st rank?

Your internal school rank never changes once its been sent to the Board of Studies. Top internal rank gets the top HSC test mark for your class/subject. The rest are changed and mixed around. Other users know more about that part and will surely post.

EDIT: Apologies if I'm mistaken on this.

But surely, if the internal mark difference is say 1 and the external is somethign ridiculous like 50, it wont mean those below 1st rank will get pulled up dramatically?

If that was the case it would be wonderful.

Is there anyway we could contact the Board of Studies, for this information?

I'm pretty sure you could. If you feel like being lazy, there are a lot of bos users that know how it works pretty much in and out. I'm confident in their knowledge, so just give it a few days and you will know.

I'm lead to believe that the person ranked 1st internally keeps the highest test mark regardless of what they achieve.

Person ranked first keeps the highest internal mark even if they get 0.
