A galvanic cell consisting of:

Ni in Ni(NO3)2 (pale green) and Cl2 bubbled through KCl (colourless) with Pt electrode

Explain any coloure changes observed in this cell as the reaction proceeds. (2 marks)

So when we refer to our Table of Standard Reduction Potentials we can see that Ni has a reduction potential of -0.24 V, whereas Cl2 (g) is +1.36V. Therefore Ni will undergo oxidation and Cl2 (g) will be reduced. So we can deduce that more Ni atoms will go into ionic state after displacing Cl2 and the pale green colour will get darker.
