I seems grammatically correct because you arent talking about multiple friends otherwise it would be friends'. But I it's up to your discretion whether or not you use the contraction or just "is" instead...

It's exactly the same. But if you're writing (ie, doing a creative or something), use 'friend is' for the contraction - just for ease of reading.

This. Generally don't use contractions or shortened words when writing for English or some HSIE subjects... also helps the flow of the essay/response using the full (extended) word.
