Extension English Students- how many hours? (1 Viewer)

Ok I was wondering how many hours of lessons you have each week? I was reading the syllabus for the extension course the other day and it said that students should do "60 hours of indicative study". At our school, we do one and a half hours a week (although this is closer to one hour seeing at the half hour is lunchtime and our teacher is ALWAYS late.)

What confuses me is that if there's thirty weeks in year 11, and we do one and a half hours a week....then don't we miss out on at least 15 hours of class? I asked my teacher this and she didnt know what i was talking about and thought that perhaps the sixty hours included "homework time". (my teacher is grossly incompetent) Have i just done my maths wrong or is our class actually missing out on class time? and if so, what should i do?

Well...we do 2 one hour lessons.
But, it's alot of work out of school.

I have two hours a week.

So all up that should add up to 60 hours per year. But I've heard stories similar to yours, where the hours don't quite add up. Follow it up with a higher authority. And the work load is quite strenuous... I did an 8000 word project at the end of last term. (Stayed up to like 3am on the day it was due just to do it, LOL)

I have 2 55 minute classes a week. But so often our friday class is cancelled.

I have a feeling though that 60 hours includes homework time, also it might be the whole HSC course, so thats this year and next year.

We have one hour on the odd tues, and two hours on the even tues, but our teacher is trying to get us to do another 3 hours a week study :mad1:

In Week 1 I have two classes and in Week 2 I have three. So five 50 minute classes a fortnight.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I spoke to my teacher again today and she said she had spoken to the head teacher who told her that our school sacrificies the 15 hours in the preliminary course so they don't have to change the timetable in year 12. or something equally ridiuculous.

Hearing how many hours you all do makes me worried.....not only are we not having enough lessons, our teacher is really, really, really bad. I know i've complained on here before, but we don't get given any work, and she literally does not know ANYTHING about gothic literature, or even the course. When someone asked her what extension 2 english was she said she thought everyone in the state gets given a topic and u have to write a short story based on that topic.

My friends and i have been to see the head teacher but she hasn't really done anything. The problem is our teacher is a nice enough person, but just grossly underexperienced. So its so much harder to make a complaint, because we're all friends with her, it makes it seem like a personal attack.

What should we do? Should we go to an even higher authority? (i have absolutley no doubt that our entire class will fail the hsc if she stays our teacher). I just feel like its unfair on us because we don't learn anything and its unfair on her because she is in no way qualified to teach the course.

Any suggestions?

Considering the bos requirements for alot of courses in prelim state 'indicative' hours means taht alot of private schools finish their prelim studies at the end of term 2 of year 11, starting year 12 work in term 3 of year 11 [and it's totally acceptable apparently..]

I know certainly that this happens in a few private schools for the modern history course.

I know this doesntquite apply to your situation but my point is that if other schools miss a whole term of prelim work than hvaing a few less hours in prelim is hardly going to make a difference.

ALthough i do understand what you're saying.. i'm in year 12 and i dont think we get enough eng ext 1 /eng ext 2 periods either..

Is it defined at our school that 1 unit = 3 lessons per fortnight. so 2 unit courses mean that we have 3 lessons per week.

For english ext, we have 3 lessons per week, 70 min lessons...and it still feels like we dont have enough time to do stuff, our class discussions take up so much time, theres soo much to discuss on a single question.

at my school we do 2 hrs a week
but i wouldnt worry if something happens its the schools fault not yours, their the ones that are paid to be informed. And Besides you brought it to their attention, what more can you do??

you know what sucks though.. in maths ext. we were half an hour short so now we have to have a lesson at lunch time. dosent that infringe on some sort of rule? i believe it does, depriving poor school kids on valuable lunch time socialising and eating, what the hells with that.

Because when your teachers are bending over backwards to not expose you to the HSC course because it's not allowed, it's hardly fair that some schools get taught it anyway. Nor very credible, but meh- that's why I'm asking.

That must mean that you guys have finished quickly, though I still have qualms about schools finishing earlier than others. It's pretty much unfair and teachers know that this is against the rules.

We have 3 times 80 minutes lessons each fortnight...

2 periods . ~53 mins/period/week.

So, that's ~106m/week.
254400s/yr = 4240m/yr = 70.67hr/yr > 60 indicative hours/yr. However, I forgot that there are only thirty weeks, so we simply multiply 70.67hr by 0.75 (3/4) = 53.0025hr.

Is 53hr > 60hr? No. So we also don't have enough indicative hours; off by 11.67% - very bad.
Not to mention the lessons skipped due to factors beyond humanly control.

I do 3 hours and 50 mins a fortnight... so i think we just make the hours.. but i think as someone said the 60 hours is over year 12 as well, because there's no way we would have done 60 hours in three terms! (eek we start year 12 next term...)
