There's not a specific length they should be; rather they should cover all the required information in detail.

The length of a long response can usually be determined by how many marks it is worth. If it's about 10 marks, then I think about 500 words should suffice, as long as you get all the details down.

For those 40-45 minute extended responses - you should be looking around 800-1000 words.

As long as everything is covered in sufficient detail, then you'll be fine.

In PD/H/PE, I would write half of what some people wrote in extended responses, but because I didn't waffle on about useless crap, and properly structured my response I'd always get 18/20+.

Not everyone can write as quickly as you, FCB =P

The more the merrier yes - but we should remember to not put fluff or bullcrap in our essays - it's probably what killed my chances for a Band 6 in English Advanced. I tried bullcrapping on Module C and got 9/20 as a result =P

Don't listen to people that say "length doesn't matter". It's true you should cover the details but for a 40 minute essay you're looking:

1000-1200 words at most. even 900 would be suffice. But then again, if it's all covered with bull shit and doesn't cover the specific information... then all that 1000 words = wasted

I would recommend around 800 words, and make the responses concise and clear :p

For economics, they recently gave more specifications on the lengths. (probably similar to other subjects) - check board of studies

"The expected length of response will be around six pages of an examination writing
booklet (approximately 800 words). "

27-31 words per minute, about a word every two seconds without pause. I would envy someone with that ability.
