Hi everyone, i was just wondering whether electroplating and electrorefining is out of the syllabus or not?
when we did acidic environment out teacher made us do them as well as electrolosys, which are similar, and warned us they out of syllabus but he wanted to teach it cos we doing industrial chem, so even for industrial chem do we need to know them 2 or just electrolysis?

Thankyou

for industrial chem,
you only need to know about galvanic cells and electrolysis (and electrolytic cells).

distinguish between the three
electrolysis methods used to
extract sodium hydroxide:
mercury process
diaphragm process
membrane process
by describing each process and
analysing the technical and
environmental difficulties
involved in each process

that's pretty much the only time you'll need to know about electrolysis, though feel free to correct me if im mistaken.

there's another dot point about the differences between galvanic/electrolytic cells, so you might want to know about electrolysis there also.

but when they say electrolysis and electrolytic cells, do they include electroplating and electrorefining ?

Nope. Electroplating and electrorefining is cut out (thankfully).

It is a bit strange strange on the part of the board to get rid of this as this is where all the the use of electrochemistry is explained. But i don't mind.
