Hi!

I'm going to start uni this year, and need a lightweight laptop for notemaking, internet etc., and I'm thinking of purchasing the eeePC.

Has anyone used this product?

Is it worth the money, considering that it only has 4Gb (is the 8gb available in Aus?) of storage?

On a slightly different note, can anyone recommend me some new/refurbished light weight laptops (<=2kg) for about $500? I might have to buy it myself and I'm low on cash

Thanks

4 gigs for $500?

personally id go for a low priced real laptop for the increased functionality.

Your paying money for the fact that it's light weight basically.

That laptop reminds me of a computer i had once, it had a hard drive of about 4.75 gigs or something.

That was 10 years ago.

Its a lot more portable, and you'll find yourself actually doing useful things on it, rather than fucking around on the net etc. Its a great little thing if you're after portability and don't want to lug around a laptop.

The person above me seems to have missed that the portability IS the entire point of it.

Ricenmoo - All I need the device for is notemaking and possibly internet. The space is not an issue as I will most likely be using a USB and when at home attach an external HDD (if it's possible)

AsyLum - So you own one? If so, is the screen too small for word processing?
And can it run Microsoft Word, as I'm planning on using a USB for transferring word files.
Does it take too long to get used to the small keys?
And, I'm sort of a noobcake at computer terminology but what does 'flash memory/storage' or something mean?

It comes with OpenOffice.org, which can handle .doc files.

Flash storage means it's not an actual hard-drive, but solid state memory, so no moving parts.

Flash memory storage refers to the solid state device technology that the hard drive uses.

Advantages over a conventional hard drive:
-No moving parts, hence more robust.
-No mechanical failure
-Faster access/seek time (means it runs faster than a normal hard drive)
-Less power consumed (for small drives anyway)

Cons:
-New technology, pretty expensive per GB that it can store (dollar/GB)
-Limited storage capacity for now
-More sensitive to electrical static than the old hard drives.

edit: beaten to it...no it should operate like a normal hard drive

Looks like I learnt nothing in physics

Thanks so much guys!! Very useful information.

A few more questions :shy: Just the details hehe

1. Is there much reflection in the screen?
2. Is it easy to remove linux and other pre-installed programs and put a windows operating system, i.e. Vista, XP
3. Is there a way to get a windows operating system onto USB?
4. And from my previous post, is the screen too annoying to use when using word and are the keys too small to get used to?

You could probably wipe the hard drive and install windows, but it'll cost you.

Actually after doing research on it I don't have a problem with it anymore, seeing as though it's very much like windows.

I was reading on another forum that the eee pc comes with the option of having XP or the Linux OS. I'm not sure if ASUS has bought that option to the Australian EEE PCs yet

IMO, the screen is way too small for any regular laptop user. You'd be having eye strains.

I'm tempted to buy one. Small screen, light weight and linux preinstalled would make for a good little programming laptop.
