Are dx and delta-x interchangable?

If, say, I wrote delta-x in normal integration or I used dx as the thickness of a cylinder in volumes, would that be regarded as incorrect?

dx is the limit when delta-x approaches zero. So when you do the finite summation with the approximation you use delta-x and once you take the limit to get an integral you use dx.
