Say if you had crap internal marks, yet good rankings. Will you get the mark according to your rank?

And two more things:

If you score higher in your hsc exams then your assesment. Does it pull your assesment up?

And has anyone here ever achieved a band 5 in standard english

With internal marks, the person who comes first internally receives the highest external mark from their cohort as their final internal mark. The same goes for the person who is coming last. The rest receive a moderated mark based on their rank and the relative gaps between students. The process is outlined in more detail here: http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/hsc-results/moderation.html.

So to answer your first question, the internal marks are determined by your position in the cohort (which is made up of your ranking and the relative gaps between you and everyone else). The actual raw internal mark gives little indication of what your final mark would be - for example, a raw mark of 80 could moderate to almost anything.

People do achieve band 6's in Standard but it is uncommon - last year only 54 students out of 34,000 got a band 6 in standard. The year before that it was 64 out of 32,000 that got a band 6.

No, it's not solely based on ranks. It's based on how you are positioned in your cohort, and how your cohort performs in the HSC exams. E.g. coming 5th by 2% puts you in a better position than coming 5th by 20%; you're still 5th in both cases, but the first case is better. Also note that your moderated assessment mark will definitely be within the highest and lowest HSC exam marks of your cohort, i.e. ALL moderated assessment marks for your cohort are within the highest/lowest HSC exam marks. So that is why it is paramount to do as well as possible in the HSC exams.

If you score higher in your hsc exams then your assesment. Does it pull your assesment up?
No. Your moderated assessment mark is independent of your HSC exam mark, unless, your HSC exam mark is the highest or lowest exam mark or if you're ranked first or last in the cohort.

Well about 8.7% of the state scored a Band 5 in English (Standard) last year: http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/ebos/static/BDHSC_2011_12_15130.html
