What if there's only a 1 mark internal difference between me and an above person, and then the above ranked person gets a 65 exam mark and i get a 75 exam mark? Will I get a 65 assessment then? That wouldn't be fair at all.

from what i understand, it's more about the moderation.

let's say:
person 1 - rank 1: 88% internally
coolcat - rank 2: 87% internally

person 1 - 65% in hsc
coolcat - 75% in hsc

your INTERNAL mark would be moderated. so person 1, despite performing poorly, would get the highest external mark that has been achieved in your cohort in the hsc as their INTERNAL mark, while you would get the second highest.
as for your EXTERNAL mark, nothing changes - you don't get the other person's external mark. external marks are only dependent on scaling/ how well your cohort does i think.

again, you would not get the 65% for your internals EXCEPT if it was indeed the 2nd highest external mark of your cohort.

this is all from my own understanding, someone pls correct me if i'm wrong

they do take into account relative gaps yes, you would not get 65 for your assessment mark

this entire rank system is bs. i wonder who even thought of this? were they on drugs or something?

like why make us do internals just to give us a standardized exam mark?

we shouldn't be doing internals at all ☹

Google is your friend:
therefore someone with a lower rank DOES drag down the entire cohort except 1st rank

The graph gives a visual representation of how NESA moderated the example school-course group. NESA uses 3 anchor points so that the group’s school assessment mark adjustments are based on a curve (a quadratic function) rather than a straight line.

can someone confirm this for me? "if you are rank 24/50 and the 24th rank is 80% in hsc whereas i get 97% (rank 1 for hsc) do i get the average of both or is this high enough to be considered an outlier) "

outlier im pretty sure, someone from my school got an 85 in chem for both exam and assessment despite being 2nd internally. The 2nd external mark didn't even come close to 70.

it's so unfair, cohort either have to perform at your level or extremely bad in order for you to keep your own mark
