Does my cohort affect me if I am ranking first/second? (1 Viewer)

Hey!

So Ive been informed that my cohort will drag me down. My teacher explained that if I achieve 90% in say a senior science exam, and somebody else in the class scored 30%, they will reduce my marks to level me and that person up. Is this true? Because I go to a school which ranks 450-500 (not sure where it lies between there) and only about a handful of students actually put in the effort and gain a score above the average, whereas the rest lie below the average. I am a hard-working student who needs an 84.1 to get into psychology at UWS. I am ranking currently first in all my 6 subjects with a score of 90+, and I aim to stay that way. Please reassure me that this isnt the case. Thankyou.

If you match the mark in the actual HSC exams you should be fine.

If you're first, the cohort performance will have NO impact upon your marks as you will receive the higher internal mark regardless. If you're second on the other hand, the performance of your peers will have an influence on your internal performance.

Your actual score does not matter. Your ranking does. If you rank first you receive the highest HSC mark from your cohort as your assessment mark (50% of your HSC) and your HSC mark is your own score (50% of your HSC). If you come 2nd, and say you're an outlier with a 96 in the HSC when the 2nd highest score is 80, unfortunately the person who came 1st he gets 96 for half his HSC while you get 80.

I don't think it's that clean cut. They take into considerations do relative gaps between the ranks don't do (which becomes significant in a dodgy school with much variance).

That's what I always thought. Turns out I was wrong.

I think it might be good to think strategically;

Instead of being top 6 in all your classes, why don't you try to rank first in 2 of them, and have a top 10 rank in the others.

This way, you can set the highest HSC mark for two subjects (both of which you'll get, as you ranked first), and have your assessment mark (but not HSC mark) brought down a little bit by a weaker cohort in your other 3 subjects? This might be risky.

If not, just rank first in all of them, and you'll be sweet (provided you perform in the HSC). Shoot me a PM if you need any more help, I go to a school with a poor ranking too (300's).

If you are ranked first both internally and externally, then your cohort will have no effect. In other circumstances, your position in the cohort is what matters most - this is basically a combination of your ranking and the relative gaps between you and everyone else. The actual size of your mark really doesnt matter - a 90% could become virtually anything with moderation.
