Distinction Courses (1 Viewer)

Is anybody doing a Distinction course, or has completed one already? I put an expression of interest for Cosmology (undecided between that and Philosophy), but I probably won't do it since I already have 13 units. But for anyone who has done it, how does it work exactly? Is it entirely by correspondence? Is it very difficult in comparison to standard HSC subjects? (I gather it is more difficult, but I'm just not sure how much more difficult)

cosmology this year had the most people ever dropping it. The workload in cosmology is enourmous and i was glad i got rejected from doing it. I watch my friends do it and stress over it. Philosophy, however is less stressing. People find it alot more easier and more fun, however everyone wants to do it. there are a few distinction course threads in the forum do a search

Philosophy is done at usyd. I think it is difficult. You have your exam in mid-June, and a whole lot of assessments during the year, but you finish the course early. My friend did it this year, and that's what I gathered from it.

None of the distinction courses are done at any universities. The philosophy material is delivered by the University of New England whilst comparitive literature and cosmology are delivered by Charles Sturt University.

On a side note, they should make shirts saying "I survived cosmology" because god damn it was hard! *breathes* Philosophy people do hardly anything and average a mark of 87 after scaling... thats a bloody high distinction (top band). It just isnt fair I tell ya.

In summary, do philosophy You have puny 500-1000 word essays for the most part, no major work and the female to male ratio is pretty much even Of course, cosmology residentials kick serious ass!

Oh and in terms of difficulty ~ ReNcH ~, I see you do chemistry. The HSC sciences all have 4 modules to learn in a year... cosmology has 9.

i'm doing philosophy this year and i'd have to say i actually enjoy the stuff they teach, alot of the stuff makes you think.

the work load aint as high as cosmo.. thats why 59 students doing philo and what only 20 doing cosmo.

i think 10 people dropped from cosmo, 0 from philo.

but again base this on something you enjoy, dont do philo just coz u think its easier. who knows u might be good at cosmo if you enjoy phys.

you can always do comparative literature as well.. dont forget that. You get to study 'weatherwoman' that japanese cult movie which was like porno.

Comp lit is pretty full on too, lots and lots of reading but its quality stuff if you like literature. People who apply for it generally get in. When i did it, there was about 7 people. 5 guys, 2 girls.

I think I've heard enough feedback and come to the conclusion of "Hell No!". I put an expression of interest for cosmology - 1% chance of actually doing it even if I got accepted. As for the others - comparative literature wouldn't interest me, philosophy might be good but I probably wouldn't do it anyway.

BTW. If you do a Distinction course, does it count towards your uni requirements - i.e. one less subject to do in uni?

Never heard of that. HSC level is HSC level...uni is different.

You can gain some credit at uni for the distinction course you do. Its on a case by case basis though. Read the link for more info.
