Distinction Courses? (1 Viewer)

I was just wondering whether anyone here attended the distinction course information day today at Sydney Uni, and what course you've decided to do, if any. I think I'll be doing philosophy... sounds really interesting. Anyone else?

My little brother went today. He's trying for DC Cosmology.

I went last year, tried for DC Philosophy (didn't get it LOL ).

What courses did you accelerate in? Meh... If I don't get accepted... BOS (or whoever chooses) DIES.

He goes to my (old) school.

It's not in the top 120, so he's not one of those Ruse/Knox/SBHS boys heheh.

I remember last year, PLENTY of asian clicks and groups.

He accelerated in 2/3U Maths, doing 4U this year - like me, but I suck at maths, so I did 4U eng instead :rofl:

If you don't get accepted, don't worry.
It's a lot of independent work - but scaling kicks butt (if you work hard all year, that is... like any other subject).

Yeh... my brother did Philosophy last year... he did really well in it, and enjoyed it a lot... so yeh.

I've done Biology, 2U Maths and English (Adv).. hopefully...

Yeh I went today... I went to get my certificate that is.
I did Cosmology this year.

You should reallllllly do cosmology. It's way better than Philosophy. And no - I'm not just saying it. My best friend did Philosophy (she was the rather overdressed one wearing white and black *cough*.. I *SO* did not say that or she'd kill me ) and she didn't have anywhere near as much fun as I did in cosmo.

Cosmo has way more socialising - and isn't *just* about the essays and assignments. There's a 5 day residential which absolutely rocks in February (but I'm sure you heard about that today) - Basically.. it's 5 days of no sleep - and playing volleyball, soccer, swimming, scaring each other to hell and back at night when you're star gazing, and sleeping during the lectures.. *cough*..

I tried reading some of her modules through the year and just went... It's strange, stoopid, and annoying.
Cosmo, on the other hand, is more facts based - and not airy fairy.

OK I think i'm gonna stop advertising Cosmology. lol.. Whichever you decide to do - you'll ultimately enjoy it. It's a challenge tho - but do it.

Yeh cosmology sounds great too... especially with the residential where you actually go out there and see the telescopes etc. I lot more hands on approach.

Did many of the guys freak out at the 7000-12000 word Major Project requirement of Cosmology? I remember last year when I went to that lecture - everyone was like.. No Way!
And talking about it today - we were like.. "God Damn.. I struggled to keep it under 12000".. lol..

Good luck with getting in. Looking at your ranks and subjects you've accelerated in - you are definately in. lol

I did Philosophy and got that certificate thing today. Only 2 out of 5 of my school went haha.

Philosophy is the least work and traditionally scales the best, although scaling is highly variable due to the small number of people who do the subject. Which of the three you prefer with regards to the subject matter is up to you.

Don't be worried about lack of Asians, it's at least 50/50 in Philo, perhaps more in cosmo (sorry to stereotype). I remember the first philo res, it was like asians on one side of the room, non asians on the other haha.

They build it up as being hard to get into but people get low-mid band 5s and get in so they over-rate it a bit in that respect. Pretty much anyone that applies for Comparative Literature (or 'Clit') gets in.

One of the things I liked about philosophy was that the words "performance band", "band 6" and "outcomes" were not uttered once.

It's good but you only get out what you put in, and it's very easy not to put in because it's done via correspondence.
