What is the difference between:
explain the contribution to the development and expression of TRADITIONN of ONE significant person OR school of thought:
and:
Analyse the impact of this person or school of thought on TRADITION.

are they the same thing? Because, by explaining the contribution to the development and expression, isn't that the impact on the tradition? Are they merely different BOS verbs?

The two verbs aren't the same thing, and they do require slightly different apporaches when answering the questions.

Contribution is like what the school of thought ADDED to the religious tradition, so any new additions, and what it did to the religious tradition.
Whereas Impact is like how the religious tradition CHANGED because of the school of thought.

It is difficult to differentiate between the two, but each does have a different approach to the question. Though most of the information you use in one you will use in the other, it does require you to approach the question differently.
