Credit/Distinction average in B. Commerce? Job opportunities? (1 Viewer)

I'm planning to do a B. Commerce at UNSW now (main aim changed from Medicine to Commerce), and I'm curious as to how difficult it is to maintain a credit or distinction average at UNSW. For those people who have consistently achieved these results (at any university for a B. Commerce), how many hours are you actually putting in? Is it mainly the "perfect balance" like the HSC or purely working hard out now as Uni is far more difficult than the HSC?

Since I have no chance of obtaining an ATAR of 99.5+ right now, I'm planning to do this and then combine with B. Laws (if I achieve an ATAR of 95-97+). Has anybody transferred? Is it possible to do a B. Commerce at UWS, maintain a credit or distinction average at the same uni (UWS) and then combine to B. Laws at UNSW so you're doing a combined degree (B. Commerce/B. Laws) at UNSW now?

And what exactly are the job opportunities for a B. Commerce? I know 2 people who work at PwC from their B. Commerce degree. What is the pay?

10-12 hrs per week per subject is recommended at UWA = 40-48 hrs a week overall, if you are studying ~50 hrs a week without a HD average doing commerce (which is considered to be quite an easy degree) I'd drop out. Credit average I'd say is basically cramming in the study week before exams and putting a bit of effort into projects.

The only harder thing about university is managing your own time, I think if you are dedicated enough to attend every lecture OR study by yourself if the lectures are shit (and some will be) you will get a credit average atleast.

Transferring into Medicine at UWA requires a GPA of 5.5 which is basically a credit/distinction average. I think you'd need higher to get from UWS to UNSW though - I reckon doing B.Comm at UNSW and transferring to B.Comm/B.Law would be the easiest way of getting into law as you wouldn't have to worry about getting credit for your UWS units which is a pain.

Job prospects and pay depends on your majors, $90k was the first year IBing pay this time last year but it is competitive, especially in this economic climate.

Or you can also take the B.Com into the construction industry and earn $65k first year out.

A lot less competition, a lot more secure. Different stroke for different folks.

There are many, many career opportunities available to you with a base of a B.Com. It just depends where your interest lies and what specialisation you want to pursue.

Reshad why the switch? Surely your UMAT will get you an interview at UWS and probably other uni's around the country that have more of a focus on the UMAT as opposed to the ATAR?

Credit/Distinction average is not that difficult. Its certainly a lot easier than HSC because there is a lot less pressure. It depends what uni you go to and what course you do though. At UNSW, law students are marked against a bellcurve benchmark so its a lot more competitive to get a credit/distinction average than commerce where its based on your actual raw marks.
