My PIP topic needs a bit of rewording but, basically, its: "How significant are social and cultural factors in influencing students’ subject and career choice?"

Basically it focuses on the common belief that career path differences in relation to gender are based on biological reasons and my hypothesis is that it's actually largely influenced by society and culture.

Now my problem is that I can't really 'prove' if it is biological or social and cultural.. I can look through studies for biological, but is that sufficient for that section? How can I weight "personal opinions from people" and "secondary research" to find out which is more significant (biological or social and cultural)?

thanks

What do you mean by "biological reasons"
Our choices aren't in our genetic makeup. Perhaps you could address whether this influence comes from familial expectations, societal expectations based on gender, or our own personal experiences.

Not too sure what you mean by "weight". Primary and secondary research are used together in the PIP, it focuses on your own research and the secondary backs up your point (primary research)

any pip questions feel free to PM me :)

I think if you phrase the question differently it could be better and help address that issue as the focus is shifted. Maybe something like "how the socialisation of gender constructs influence academic and professional decision-making" but maybe refine the latter portion of the sentence.

In relation to your hypothesis where you intend to "disprove" the biological factors, i suggest that you avoid any discussion of biological reason. In society and culture it is largely an underlying assumption that social and cultural factors are major determinants in shaping the lives of individual. Instead I suggest you focus your hypothesis the "how" portion of the question and form your hypothesis in response to that.

I hope this helps in some way at least. Best of luck!
