fairly average, although I'd probably reckon a bit lower than mechanical, electrical and civil.

From the research I've done it seems most chemical engineering jobs are those of a process engineer and the field is not as strong as EE/ME/Civil in Australia. If your interests lie in biomolecular/bioengineering (bio fuels or medical) then prospects aren't that great. Nevertheless it's a strong degree.
