I have a 2000 pulsar with stock cd player and speakers. What is the cheapest way of improving the system so i can play good songs loud and clear?

A 2000 Pulsar should have a standard deck right? As in.. it's not integrated/part of the dash. So the cheapest way would probably be to buy a cheap deck from say JB or Stratty which has some form of amplification in it, and then buy some speakers which are low wattage but high quality/sensitive. That oughta do the trick. Watch out for the premium brand splits because they sound crap without a subwoofer- I nearly bought some at one stage!

thanks mate. i have a few more questions for you

What sort of wattage would be considered 'low'?

If i buy new speakers that are the same size as the ones in there now, can i just swap them over without much difficulty? is it a DIY job?

as you can tell i dont know shit

Perhaps 40W RMS is a generally low wattage speaker. Peak output on my 40Ws is rated to 190W - so look out for excessively large numbers.

It is DEFINITELY a DIY job if you buy a same size speaker. Usually you can use the same holes - and even the same screws. There really is nothing to it. Just make sure you get the right size, if you don't want a larger project.

Sorry seremify for stealing your thunder.

I'm planning on installing (same size) speakers myself into my sister's car- should be an easy affair since all I'm doing is taking out the old and putting in the new and rescrewing. Unless you're installing an amp or something, then it shouldn't be too hard imo. Although it might be a bit daunting to strip your car's doors/trim without damaging anything.

Btw how much are you looking at spending? Just looking at a Stratty catalogue on my desk, I'm personally thinking of spending around $150 or so on a deck, maybe upto $220 if there's something nice (I see a nice Pioneer one), and then putting in some $100 speakers or so in the front, and maybe spend another $70 or so on ptuting 6x9s in the back. I was originally going to go as cheap as possible, but the price difference between the basics and something decent, isn't that much IMO (deck-wise, cheapest deck is $94, then $128 for a Sanyo, then $138 for a Pioneer, and so on...), and the speakers- well, you don't want to cut corners there if you can spend just a little bit more than the cheapest (I think there are some $12/$19 speakers?)....

I'd spend more on the 6x9s than you're budgetting.

Also consider speanding extra on the HU to get mp3 cd compatibility.

6x9s won't fit I realised.

I'm trying to budget this as tightly as possible purely because it's not my car. I'm only doing it to make the car just a tad more bearable when I need to drive it for a fortnight or so.

Today I'm going to take out the speakers, see what size they are, go to JB Hifi or something and get some Pioneer or something which is same size and costing upto $100 or so and then fit that back in. Hopefully it'll all be good :) Is there a way to tell if the speakers will have decent bass (or any bass)? The ones which are currently in the Terios haven't got bass, they've got this weird.. hallow sounding thing where the bass should be. It reminds me of when you have a piece of paper bent concave, and then you quickly flip it back in and out and it makes that 'bouncy' and 'wavy' noise? *shrugs* Just need something better than that.

Just thought I'd add after today's installation of new (el-cheapo $34) speakers into my sister's Terios...

Watch out for two things:
1. Stupid sizes/holes (which required drilling and re-measurement to fit a 6" speaker into a hole which had a 4" speaker with metal around it to fit what appeared to be a 6" hole)
2. Stupid connectors (which make connecting speakers apart from factory very difficult; not to mention changing the HU without having to rewire the whole thing very challenging).

Ended up not changing HU. And I realised... might as well stick to my own car.
