So I'm wondering to take 4unit Mathematics, but I am unsure if I'm capable of doing so. I went 100% in the first term assessment, and then got 66% for the first exam, and I got 83% for the 2nd exam. For the preliminary exam, our school bought it off an independent school, and it was pretty difficult. I think I went okay, like around high 70's or mid 80's. I'm averaging around 90 for 2U as well. Please comment and give me some advice please :(

[edit - I really do enjoy Maths and want to do 4u but am unsure if I'm able to or not]

[edit v2 - I got 77% for ext 1 in final exam and 90% in 2u. And I got into 4u mathematics !]

You can pick 4u up and if you think it's too hard, drop down
Not a big deal

I will only have 10 units if I take extension 2 so I wouldn't have a backup. If I take Ext 2 I'll have;
Chemistry
Physics
Ext 1
Ext 2
Eng Standard
(Dropping economics)

How have previous cohorts of Ext 2 gone at your school? Does your teacher think you are capable? Have the teacher/s who will be teaching you taught the course recently? Are they good at teaching the course? Do you really enjoy mathematics?

How well are you doing on eco? If you're doing well and can manage the workload keep it and do 12
If your willing to put the work in 4u is an interesting and rewarding course

I'm averaging around 80 but I don't find it as interesting as I did when I first started. I have a passion for mathematics. Want to get into that actuarial studies.

I haven't really asked many students, as our school is very small, limited to around 500 in the whole school. Last person I heard that did extension 2 mathematics was two years ago, and had to go next door to another school. He dropped extension 2 as it was too much of a hassle travelling between schools. As stated above, Maths is the subject I enjoy most since I was in Primary :p

Wot

isnt 4u easier than 3u like theoretically?

since 4u is a tonne of concepts and less development of each of them while 3u is less concepts but far deeper development?

bleh thought I remember it being like that. Anyway. I am gonna start relearning both for tutoring ppl yay cos I cant get a job lol.

Theres a topic in 4u called "Harder 3 unit" so its pretty weird if 3U is harder than "Harder 3U"

I know lol, I did 4u m8. Just saying I found 4u topics very easy on their own, blending topics of course became more of a challenge. Meanwhile I thought I rememvered sone 3u topics being like wish, this takes more thinking than 4u

If you are averaging 70%+ in Extension 1, then you are capable of Extension 2 content. That doesn't necessarily mean that you'll do well, but the general rule of thumb is that if you can do Extension 2, then you should do Extension 2. So go do it. Especially since you mentioned that you enjoy it.

The only thing I can think of that proves to be a hindrance is the fact that your school doesn't regularly teach Extension 2, which is quite problematic given that even in schools where MX2 is regularly taught, teachers themselves may sometimes struggle with the questions.

But my message still stands: go for it. As long as you are getting consistently a minimum 50% raw mark, it'll still scale extraordinarily well (e.g. lower 50s raw mark in the HSC delivers an ATAR equivalence of approximately 98), and helps develops the strong mathematical background for the quantitative career you are aiming for (plus satisfying your mathematical interests).

Those are pretty good marks. Highly recommend doing 4u :D (srsly, I don't know why people who could do 4u don't do 4u - it's free ATAR lol.)

I think it's because of their disrupted mindsets.

So how did your 4U raw mark compare to your 3U raw mark?

Im loving this not-so-subtle attempt at mockery! lol!

and I got no less than 90% raw for every 3u and 4u exam at school, including half yearly and yearly bought from Independent. Admittedly this made me very cocky and so for HSC I did very little preparation beyond a few past papers and then absolutely paid the price +my dad lost cancer fight 2 weeks after final exam from 6 months of battling, so basically had no reason at all to be getting a band 6 so band 5's for days. Had band 6 in ext 1 but was dragged down from rank cos I missed a paper and couldnt catch up to one other dude who was always proportionally behind me.

Yes braintic, I dun goofed HSC for multiple reasons, glad we got that over with :)

I expect almost all Ext 2 students would get a much lower Ext 2 raw mark than Ext 1.
That is the point I was trying to make, and I asked you merely because I expected you would be typical in that regard.
F knows where your attitude is coming from.
