okay, we need internet and have naturally decided on broadband. but here the easieness ends.

We have a phone line byt it is not in our name (we would prefer it not to be)
We live in Armidale
Telstra prepaid home does not allow broadband
We dont want a fix time period (ie, not 12mth contract or 6mth contract)

Any ideas? =/ cos we r so lost......

Will be too expensive or non-existant for your unflexible needs.

You can try http://whirlpool.net.au/ for the plan search, but don't hold any high expectations.

expensive solution:

go with a Telstra NextG solution.
no fixed contract.
speeds comparable to ADSL1.

modems are about $300. you can either get a USB modem which means you'll have to work out your internet connection sharing if you have multiple computers at home, or get a laptop card ... for laptops! (there may be a way to put a PCMCIA card into a router: linksys wrt54g3g or dovado http://www.sharethenet.com.au/.
both these will be pricey.

vodafone have a 3g network, but don't think there's reception in Armidale.

Get a line rental and get broadband?

If you can't afford line rental, I don't see how you could afford internet, let alone wireless internet.

it wasnt that we couldnt afford line rental, its that we didnt want to pay for something that we werent going to use.

we went with vodafone wireless, drops out a bit, but its only 39 a month, and we usually only reach the limit with a few days left :)
