I had always planned to just do a straight Bachelor of commerce at Macq upon hearing that it has a very good business faculty and thought i could perhaps scrap in, however after getting 84 and relising i have 8 bonus points, was curious as to whether i should do the Bachelor of applied finance and commerce (professional accounting) degree and would this enhance my job prospects at earning higher paying jobs then just the standalone bachelor of commerce? and just general comments regarding Macq business faculty are appreciated ;)

P.s i was looking to specialise at the likes of accounting/stockbroking/banking (not entirely sure yet)

I Know of a couple of people who were originally doing the applied finance and switched to normal commerce with finance major as they were doing double degrees and the applied finance is much harder was was making their GPA drop.

It's entirely up to you but from what I have heard the applied finance degree is much harder. You can however always so what they did and try it out for first year and if you don't like it just switch to commerce with a finance major.

As for not knowing what degree you want to do - just be careful some of the options for first year required units differ if you are doing accounting as your major. Just keep this in mind that you may want to take the units needed for accounting and then if you choose not to do it then it makes no difference. For example if you don't do ACCG1A and choose to do ACCG106 instead (you can do either under commerce major) then you can't do accounting major. Best to speak to an academic advisor at theuniversity to make sure you are doing what is needed to give you the option the choose in 2nd year.

i've often thought about what the difference was.
I am doing law/ commerce (finance).

I think if you want to work in that area, you should do a straight applied finance courrse as im guessing it'd be more specialised to that field.

However, I think if your not sure, you can do commerce and get a more rounded approach to business and then still major in finance, and if u wanted you could add an extra year and try and do more finance units if you felt it would better your job prospects.

It's really where you want to go with it.

By the sounds of things, you have not decided which area you want to go into as the aforementioned areas are quite different. With that being said, if you're almost certain that those are 3 areas which you want to get into then I suggest scrapping the BAppfin/Bcom(accg) preference and opting for the BEco and BAppfin. Essentially the Appfin/Accg combination seems like a double major but the Eco/AppFin can be argued as a worthy substitute for a comm/eco double degree. It also needs to be said that you don't even need an accounting major to score work at a big 4 accounting firm. My friends didn't major in accg and are working within the big 4. When I interviewed at one of the big4, alot of the candidates had varied backgrounds.
