I think when the ABC (the only television station to run the story?) reported it, they noted that it isn't 100% accurate and relies heavily on student surverys.

If thats the case then i wouldn't be surprised to find UNSW so low. For most of the subjects, students are forced to do a survey at the end of the semester.

Wollongong's starring role in the 2006 Good Universities Guide
Aug 02, 2005

The University of Wollongong's status as one of Australia's top research and teaching institutions has been confirmed with five-star ratings across key categories in the nation's authoritative guide to choice of university.

The 2006 Australian Good Universities Guide, is about to be launched in newsagents and bookshops in Australia and overseas, and the University of Wollongong has achieved an impressive maximum five stars in six of the key categories in the independent Guide. Only the top 20 per cent of universities can be awarded a five-star rating in any one category.

Wollongong has scored five-star ratings for a second successive year in (1) Research Intensity, (2) Graduate Rating, (3) Getting A Job (4) Positive Graduate Outcomes, (5) Graduate Starting Salary and (6) Staff Qualifications.

The Guide's publishers, Hobsons, highlighted in a statement issued with the latest Guide that Wollongong has scored consistently well across all major indicators. The publishers say that the Guide is widely recognised as the nations authoritative guide for anyone choosing a university course or campus.

"Look at the categories in which Wollongong has gained the maximum five stars and by anyone's standards they would have to be judged key indicators of a university's standing. I simply urge any prospective student to closely scrutinise this Guide -- it will speak for itself," UOW Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton said.

He said the star rating for Wollongong had been consistently high for several years now and it's great news that Wollongong has again been judged by an independent group as one of the best universities in the country not only for teaching but also as a five-star choice for potential research students.

"It's fabulous for all our international and domestic students," Professor Sutton said.

they only survey graduates.

Those surveys you are refering to detemine if lectuers get fired or promoted (well they take a some part in that decision).

So whats this mean? like does it mean UOW has the best lecturers..???
that is disputable.

more importantly it means UOW will be getting $250million extra funding over a few years.

That is impossible to say for any uni.

look at the website. there are other rankings which puts UNSW at no1 and UOW down the list.

Yes. It does mean UoW is the best-est uni in the whole wide world.

The federal government are paying UoW $250million. They aren't going to get the rankings wrong. They would ensure the funding ONLY goes to the greatest achieving tertiary institution. They want to improve national standards and UoW will be there starting point, since it is the ONLY university worth improving. :p

Not quite, santa. At the current time, that $250 million is to be distributed amongst those universities that performed well in the seven teaching criteria (keep in mind that the rankings are not 'official' as such, even though the figures used to rank the universities are). It isn't a pot of gold that is only being made available to one university.

The funny thing is that not many could compare to the top ranking university. The Federal government will be reluctant to pay out to the ones that have be trailing along. LoLz.

Thanks for being the first to put the article up though. :p

I've had a few unspeakably terrible CompSc lecturer. One unspeakably terrible statistics lecturer, and one unspeakably terrible Linguistics lecturer.

I will say there are a few CompSc lecturers that are awesome, and the whole Japanese department at UoW is wonderful, as well.
