Foreign students say some Australian universities are dumb

SOME Australian university courses are like being "back in grade 2", the head of an international students group has said.

Council of International Students Australia president Arfa Noor told an education conference the country would not attract the best and brightest from overseas until universities lifted their game.

"I don't mean to be harsh or anything but universities need to make sure that they are good enough to attract a very intelligent student," the Pakistani business student told more than 100 academics at the Universities Australia conference.

"You do hear sometimes from students who come from very good institutes back home, who work a lot, and they come into university and they say it feels like they're back in grade 2 because the things that they are being taught at a master level ... I covered at a postgraduate level."

The Melbourne Institute of Technology student said her organisation had complaints some tutors could barely speak English, class sizes were too big, and lecturers simply stood and read from slides.

"If you're from a country, especially from the Asian region, where education is very competitive ... you would have a certain level of expectations, and a lot of students are disappointed by the quality of education," she said.

But Ms Noor said students came to Australia for the experience, not just a degree, and she had loved her three years here.

However, she said universities and governments should fix accommodation and public transport issues so struggling students did not have to cram 10 to a house to save money.

About 550,000 international students study in Australia each semester and last year contributed $13.9 billion to the economy.

I thought the same thing. I assume they mean undergraduate.

I think a fair bit of the problem is international students in general themselves. Courses have been dumbed down over the years as many of them simply don't possess the English skills required to succeed in them otherwise and the universities can't afford to lose them (international students) and their funding now.

I was thinking that if they can't tell the difference between school and uni then they obviously shouldn't be at uni...

Why would you complain about the degree being easy? If it is reputable and gives you the qualifications you want/need, then the easier the better in my opinion.

Probably cos most expect to actually learn a lot more than they do from their coursework, whereas to really learn valuable stuff you have to go beyond in many cases (depending on degree/uni though I guess), and that's probably (in part at least) what they mean by easy.

Or maybe they just find it boring because to them it's basic stuff and they're paying a lot of money for it and dont feel they're getting much out of it other than the qualification / dont feel it's adequately preparing them for the workforce and giving them the knowledge and tools they will need.

We need less international students in Australia. Some of them are alright, although most do not hold Australian values. My mate, Andrew Bolt would be appalled at this I imagine.

Education is one of our biggest exports (3rd largest iirc) so the government and the universities arent going to mess with this cash cow.

I agree. If they speak English well and want to experience life in Australia, it is fine. If they want to continue to speak Chinese & eat fried rice only and have only Chinese friends, then go back to China or whatever rice field they came from...

It is true. Personality will get you a job, marks won't (obviously some minimum mark such required still though).
