Yeh, they deserve it - I mean, ingesting a culture of helicobacter pylori is pretty extreme for any scientist...

If ulcers were due to stress than I'll be looking like one.

for random fact :) about peptic ulcer disease.. for ppl tat want to know
Both Discoverers are UWA Clinicians (1 gradded adel but is working at UWA)

remember the 3 causes arent hurry, curry, worry..

they are
85% H Pylori
20% NSAIDs (think v. heavy use of ibuprofen(nurofen) or diclofenac (voltaren))
+ other factors
*may incl stress + cortisol==> lowered immune
*Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (main genetic cause)

(for budding statisticians tat makes 100.. how? up to 40% of the population are thought to have H Pylori so NSAIDs + H Pylori are also double counted =P)

Top concerns/Complication
- bleeding
- full ulceration leading to perforation
- peritonitis
- sepsis - rare

Treatment
triple therapy
-Proton Pump Inhibitors or Bismuth compound
-2 x Appropriate Antibiotics

consider
-H2-recpt antagonist too

yep.. tats all i seem to remember for it.. mabbe tat was all that was important?
hopefully ull get wat i mean by yr 2 med :) for those trying.. or those in yr 1.

I was reading in the Australian a couple of days later this reply by a doctor who said the results aren't that accurate for a number of reasons. Most importantly (that I can remember) when Marshall swallowed the H. pylori he never got ulcer just gastritis (NB gastritis does not lead to ulcers).
Also, he said that many ulcers are cured without the use of antibiotics (I don't know how true this is - because as was posted above triple therapy involves the use of antibiotics.)
But still it's an interesting point.

yeah but its one of the steps involved in the pathogenesis..

and well technically he met up with koch's postulates.. which are bitch hard normally to follow..
actualli a few doctors are using just the PPI lik Nexium (esomeprazole) or Pariet (rabeprazole) for PUD

u kno wat tho? lots more cases of Irritable bowel syndrome are popping up.. and they present lik PUD if u just took a clinical history
