I've started the pre lim course for chemistry and the and i need some assistance.

the assignment is
- to find 2 spheres that we use a product from, and that needs to be seperated.
so im doing fractional distillation with crude oil.
- you are required to tabulate the data on properties of the mixture
- you are required to tabulate the data on the products of separation and their usages.

what i dont get is the properties of the mixture bit, is it whats in crude oil?
has anyone got tips or links for me. thanks

Crude oil is made up of a large number and variety of organic hydrocarbons so that tells you that the oil is organic, non-polar, generally immiscible in polar solvents such as water but miscible in non-polar solvents. It would also be fairly volatile and combustable.

There is an almost endless list of products from crude oil separation.
There would be all of the -ane hydrocarbons from 1C to 40C, a similar number of -ene and a number of -yne hydrocarbons. You would have cyclo-, and a number of aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives such as benzene, toluene and xylene as well as polyaromatics such as naphthalene and anthracene.
There are some examples now you need to find the data.

EDIT: On re-reading the question I think it's asking for the major products, instead of individual compounds, which would be:
Liquid petroleum gas
Gasoline
Naphtha
Kerosene and related jet aircraft fuels
Diesel fuel
Fuel oils
Lubricating oils
Paraffin wax
Asphalt and Tar
Petroleum coke
