hay guys i have an assessment due not long from now and im having problems in sorting out and breaking down and trying to answer this question:

"Discuss how different directors have interpreted the script of Shakespeare's King Lear. Refer to their overall vision of the play, their portrayal of key characters, and the staging of the play. Refer also, to one key scene of the play discussing which interpretation you found most successful."

H.E.L.P. please....................

thanks

Your gonna have to talk about different productions of king lear such as Brooks, etc. also how these directors presented their OWN views of the play in their production (give examples) and portrayal of key characters and staging of the play is just straight forward.. Finally you need to chose one scene and the interpretation u think is better and why.. give examples to support your decision.

Hope that helped a bit in breaking down the question.. =]

err i might be a bit late, but an example is richard eyre. he took a familial reading of king lear, which is more relevant to modern audiences, and he focuses on the breakdown of the family, rather than the breakdown of the kingdom

most of it is staged indoors, setting up a domestic situation. Red background suggests blood and dinner table suggests family ties.

Audiences from shakespeare's time would assume that Gonerill and Regan are purely evil, however Eyre makes the point that maybe they are driven to their brutality due to an incestual relationship (suggested by Lear kissing Regan on the lips), and have been driven to this brutality because Lear irresponsibly gave them too much power too soon
