I believe wider world is referring to a diverse world with multicultural aspects and such as for the simple gift i am not too familiar with the poem apologies.

Billy leaving home is an example of him opening himself to the wider world where he gets a sense of belonging from people like Old Bill, Caitlin, Irene and Ernie.

Also talk about how Billy in homeless yet he got into a relationship with Caitlin who has a rich family. Perhaps this is a social aspect of 'wider world'?
