Are marks scaled in the actual HSC marks? (1 Viewer)

We all know that the internal assessment marks are scaled before they are sent with the ranks to the board of studies. For example, you may get a 78 which gets scaled to a 83.

But do marks get scaled in the actual final HSC exams? For example, if i get a 75 in a subject in my HSC exam, does that mark get scaled up/down or does it stay the same?

And, what happens if you are ranked top 3 in every subject, however might fuck up your HSC exam, do you still get a scaled mark due to going good in the internal exams?

I think that the scaling of internal assessment ranks is done by each school, but I dunno if every school even does this. I don't think mine did.

I also think that your raw HSC exam mark can be 'aligned' up/down. (meaning you might have scored 80% raw, but been given 84 as your "HSC exam mark" for example.

If let's say you're coming 3rd (you did mention top 3) and you fucked up the external exam, you'd still get the 3rd highest mark in the externals as your assessment mark, and your exam mark would be what it would be (after aligning raw marks and all)

As for raw marks, yes, they do move them up and down depending on what raw mark they think equates to a band 6, band 5, and so on. For example, I think last year you only needed about 90/120 (75%) raw on the HSC exam paper in 2U Maths to get a band 6 (adjusted exam mark). Don't quote me on that figure, but that's an example of how 90% does not equate to a 90% raw mark.

As your moderated assessment mark, yes.

Remember though, that the other half of your overall HSC mark for that course comes from your external exam, so try to do well in it too!

Every time I think I understand how everything works, something new appears.

Fuck it.

Reall, you shouldn't worry about all of this. Just do the very best you can, study your arse off for the next two months, and wait. =)

There are some words that people use incorrectly.

Scaling refers to the process done by the UAC that scales your raw HSC mark.

Moderating is a process done by the board of studies to ensure that the internal assessment mark for each student is fair throughout the state (i.e. remove inconsistencies that result from varying levels of difficulties in exams/assessments by the School).

Aligning is the process done by the Board of Studies that involves 'categorising' students into specific bands to show achievements that have been met.

A flowchart here will describe the processes
