Just wonderin if anyone knows what an athenian thete did...stoopid god damn speech!

does anyone else have to do this???

all that i know is that they were the lowest class of Athenian Society after they became an empire... :bomb:

they were the low-class rowers who contributed to the Athenian navy during the Persian Wars. After the wars ended, they gained power with democracy through their demands - the govt. met these demands as they realised the importance of these men in maintaining the navy for the Athenian empire.

social class: thetes
Military position: rowers, light armed troops, spearmen and stone throwers

· State pay enabled them to serve on certain public roles (e.g. jury courts)[/font]
· Received equal vote due to their increased importance in defending Athens
