Pool staff bashed as youths riot

FOUR swimming pool staff have been beaten in an attack in Melbourne's north.

Stunned witnesses said about 30 youths had punched and kicked staff, including a young woman, on the grass at Oak Park Aquatic Centre about 4pm yesterday.
One witness, Alex, said families had recoiled in horror at the bashings.

"I've never seen anything like it," Alex said.

"I thought, 'Not another Cronulla'.

"There seemed to be dozens of people involved, with most wading into the staff and people trying to help them.

"They all appeared to be Middle-Eastern youths.

"It was very upsetting and scary. There were hysterical children everywhere."

Nicholas Burt, leisure manager at Moreland Council, which runs the pool, said the riot had occurred after a male lifeguard had tried to calm two teenagers arguing on the grass embankment.

Mr Burt said a third youth had butted in and when the lifeguard had escorted him to his belongings, after asking him to leave, a struggle had broken out.

"That's when up to 30 other patrons started to physically attack staff," Mr Burt said.

Three male lifeguards and one female security guard had been set upon by the group.

Mr Burt said that amid "blows to the back of the head and around the face", the staff had been driven into the pool's reception area.

He said the attack had continued until police arrived.

The staff, including one who suffered a smashed cheek, had been taken to hospital for treatment.

Asked how a minor dispute between teens escalated into a riot, Mr Burt said: "I'm not sure what could have sparked it.

"Until we have more information I wouldn't say it was necessarily a culturally or racially motivated attack, but I would not preclude it."

He said security camera footage would be reviewed as part of investigations.

The popular pool and its giant water-slide were shut immediately after the fracas.

Council chief Peter Brown said it was hoped the pool would reopen today.

Police said a youth, 17, had suffered a dislocated shoulder.

i have a story from Wet N Wild last tuesday. Anyways any1 who has been there, there is a ride called the flumes, theres like a manmade cavern up the top where u line up to slide down. There were like 10 middle eastern youths[probably turkish but could have been leb] standing around in there, intimidating people, leering at the girls in their swimmers and being fucktards, a few aussie blokes were there, probably part of a footy team, and started "Aussie aussie aussie, oi oi oi!" Yeah lets just say those turks arent so fucking tough when around 5o of us are yelling that in their faces. They are tough when its 30 on 1, but when there are 50 blokes who can fight back[i.e not women, not children, not 70 year old men like they normally prey on] and only 10 of them, well they kind of shit themselves.

i read that paragraph twice that he typed - he wasn't boasting he was explaining, also the aussies only shouted 'aussie aussie aussie oi oi oi' in his story, they didnt stab or bash the youths.

i guess i can see where you are comming from, but you sorta had to be there to understand it, its a park where parents take their kids, so its almost exclusively 30-40yr old men, their wives and their kids which are usually under 15[yeah i did feel i bit unfortable being like the oldest young person there but meh, gotta look after the siblings], i was taking my sisters on that ride and my mum was there too.

now these guys where about 18-20 i would say, so already its unusual that a big group of them would be there, now considering the only girls to perv on there were either about 15, or were mothers around 35, its kind of disrespectful[ not to mention wrong] of them to be looking at the girls like this. Yeah i guess most males perv on girls every now and then, but not in large groups, standing around and intimidating people they really shouldnt be even looking at.

It wasnt exactly the most volatile situation, but it could have been, i wouldnt see the aussie group doing anything unless the turks started getting violent...and if that happens we all know what would have been in the papers " Innocent group of middle-eastern youths attacked on gold coast!"
Now i didnt see it exactly as showing them how it feels, but i felt kinship with the aussies, because i too [remember i was with my younger sisters, one is only 13, and my mum] had seen them looking, and it made me feel....disgusted isnt quite the right word, maybe more suprised and then a feeling of helplessness in looking after my family.

So yeah you are right, there was alot of pride because i felt like this group were being dickheads, i would have felt the same if it was a 20yr old footy team doing the same stuff, just the response would have been different[seen as they would be aussies aswell] it was more standing up for what was right, and letting them know that there behaviour isnt welcome....haha my favourite quote from one of them, earlier i was sort of looking at them wondering why they werent really moving in the line and one of em goes " What are you looking at dickhead" yeah like looking at someone is the biggest offense now, typical leb thing to say.

anyways dunno why you are so fussed about it, if i had said the same story just not mentioned middle-eastern youths and said was some aussie group, people would be laughing.
