Is it true that we must paraphrase the essay question statement in our intro?

That's the impression I've gotten this year, but when in exams I really feel that the question already there is fine, so I'd rather copy it. If I write anything else, it confuses me and then I've got two questions to answer and I get mad :S

Is it fine to copy the question/statement as your first line?

I used to not paraphrase it. But then my comments would come back as "you need to answer the question more... develop a stronger thesis etc etc".

Yer. Some teachers don't even see it if you simply answer the question. So now, I try to paraphrase the question, and use some of the key terms in it. At the same time, you have to be careful not to repeat the question, but answer it.
