    Tafe into Uni?

Hey, I did the Tertiary Preparation course at TAFE for 1 year, which is the year 11/12 equivalent. Got a high atar at the end and got into uni. :) Go to your local TAFE and ask about your options (or contact the head of whatever department at Newcastle uni), because I'm not sure if that cert 3...

Missing 5/8 lectures per week, could this affect me greatly?

That is a lot of lectures to miss, but if you're keeping up with the tutorials and assignments, and it doesn't seem like you're falling behind, then it might be okay. When I don't want to watch the whole recorded lecture, I just read through the slides and take notes on the important bits. At...

    MQ Chatter Thread

Maybe I've been asleep for the past year and a half I've been at MQ, but did O Week always run the week before classes? Thought it was in the first week :S

    Double degrees

If it's a double degree, you get two separate ones (and two graduations I'm guessing). Some unis have combined degrees which seem to be a single degree, like "bachelor of arts/science" is 1 combined degree but "bachelor of arts with bachelor of science" is 2 separate degrees.

    University Courses/Careers for Visual Learners???

Most sciences are very visual. If physics is one of your favourite subjects already, consider that. Engineering seems visual and you'd be doing a lot of math and physics. From my own experience, geology is very visual.

help with overall mark for unit

I've only received whole numbers for overall unit marks from Macquarie, so I assume they round up.

Second semester way too busy on my timetable

That does sound like too much, but technically possible... So each unit has 3-4 things per week? I do know of some units that can have 2 lectures, 1 tute, 1 prac. So maybe you've just got an unfortunate selection of units. But double check that you haven't accidentally enrolled in something...

Wishing to change my name before University?

Between the HSC and starting uni may be a difficult time to change it legally, because it could cause too much confusion with scholarships, Centrelink, UAC, etc. My advice is change your name socially before uni - ie, introduce yourself as the new name, have it on facebook, get used to being...

    Social experiences in uni

Yeah, but you need to start somewhere. Your best friends were your acquaintances once. When you have casual friends from your classes who you occasionally hang out with, the next semester when you're choosing your timetable you can organise with those friends to register for at least one other...

    Was this fair?

Was there a marking criteria which said you had to use footnotes with referencing? I've never used footnotes... But if you've been told to use them, and you haven't, then yeah you're going to lose those marks. If you lost two marks because of it, then the rest of your marks only added up to 48...

    Social experiences in uni

Making friends at uni requires more effort than places like school. You have to be more assertive about it and ask someone in your class if they wanna grab some food after, whereas in school you just gradually form friendships by constant close association. My best luck has been on field...

    Contemplating a degree change..

If I wasn't enjoying the degree, and thought that I also wouldn't enjoy the job prospects, I would change degrees. You might be more suited to marketing, international studies, journalism, media. But I don't know about the job prospects for those. Talk to an academic/careers advisor?

Religious people studying Science, Please explain

It's not always that clear-cut. For some religious people, science actually doesn't seem to contradict their beliefs at all. Sometimes religious people are not really following organised religion, or it's more about cultural traditions than belief, or they're secretly questioning their faith...

Just completed degree, now want to do a 2nd one. What next?

You can certainly do another bachelor's degree, as many as you want. Don't worry about leaving it too late; you're young! I'm not sure how you go about applying, and I would assume your GPA would be used for entrance but maybe not. Contact an academic advisor at your current/previous uni to ask...

How long does it take you to travel to uni?

I'd like to say that I knocked out some study on the train so that I had less to do when I got home... but mostly I spent the time sleeping, listening to music, or watching movies on my laptop. But the extra time in the morning was convenient when I needed to cram in some last-minute tute...

    Worst thing about university?

The worst thing for me is that the study doesn't stop when I go home and there is always more study I could be doing. My free time then feels guilty. Rarely (if ever) am I 100% on top of everything for every unit. I could always do the supplementary readings or spend an extra hour adding more...

    Morning vs Afternoon Timetable

Early classes may force you to get up early and not waste the day, but if you're not a morning person then you'll wear yourself down. Be honest with yourself - will you be able to get 8 hours sleep and wake up in time for a 9am class? Towards the end of semester my early days generally went...
