    Interesting mathematical statements

I think glittergal96 might have thought that the bias thing with men and women was referring to the percentage out of all those accepted who are male. The study actually considered the acceptance rates of women and men applicants separately (like your cricket example basically).

I was referring to the Kakeya Needle one in those posts.

    Coordinate Geometry Question

Can't remember, check the syllabus online. It's either 2U or 3U for sure. Iirc it's in the Pender (Cambridge) Year 11 3U textbook.

    Interesting mathematical statements

Haha yeah that table one is really nice. Here's a math / physics paper about it: http://arxiv.org/pdf/math-ph/0510065.pdf Here's the Numbephile video about it:

    Interesting mathematical statements

This is the nature of weighted averages.

    Interesting mathematical statements

Haha yeah, it is an interesting result, I just meant that it's not really real-world as braintic wanted.

    Interesting mathematical statements

Another good one is that there are always two opposite points on Earth with exactly the same temperature. This is proved quickly and accessibly in this video by Dr James Grime: https://youtube.com/watch?v=5Px6fajpSio

    Interesting mathematical statements

This isn't very "practical" though, since the car / needle needs to be made arbitrarily thin if you want the area to be arbitrarily small. For anyone interested, there is a Numberphile video on the Kakeya Needle Problem: www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-dce6QmVAQ

    Coordinate Geometry Question

$I think they want you to do it like this:$ $a) The answer wanted is $x+2y + 9 + k(2x-y+3) = 0$, where $k\in \mathbb{R}$.$ $b) We want $(0,0)$ to lie on the line, so this happens iff $0+0+9 +k(0+0+3)=0 \Longleftrightarrow 3k+9=0$, that is, $k=-3$. Substitute this in to our general form in a)...

    Changing my subjects ?

Also remember that if you want 99.95 with HSC Business Studies, you'll need to state-rank or near-state-rank it.

    Teacher compromised my chances?!

OP's teacher screwed up. However, it might have been nice if the universities used some sort of regression and correlation analysis when taking in the ATAR estimates. Namely, for each school with a student applying, they'd look at past histories of that school's ATAR estimates for students vs...

    HSC 2016 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: HSC 2016 4U Marathon Here is one: $\noindent Let $n$ be a positive integer and let $\omega$ be an $n^\text{th}$ root of unity. If $k$ is an integer, show that $\omega ^k$ and $\omega^{n-k}$ are complex conjugates.$

    HSC 2016 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: HSC 2016 4U Marathon $\noindent For the first part, how did you deduce that $C(x)-l(x)$ was a perfect cube? This was basically equivalent to what we had to prove for that part, so we should probably give a bit more reasoning.$

    HSC 2016 MX2 Marathon (archive)

    Re: HSC 2016 4U Marathon \noindent \textbf{NEW QUESTION FOR 2016'ERS} $\noindent Let $\mathcal{C}: y = C(x)$ be a cubic and $\ell: y = l(x)$ be a straight line in the Cartesian Plane, and suppose they meet at a point $P \left(x^*,y^*\right)$. Show that $x^*$ is a triple root of the equation...

Anyone gotten an atar of 99+ without tutoring?

Every year people get 99+ ATAR's (even 99.95) without going to coaching. I'm guessing though that the majority of people with ~99.95 ATAR had coaching.

    Interesting mathematical statements

Yeah, but sometimes it's actually more convenient to define functions by their power series representation and then prove other things about them.

    Estimate VS Real ATAR

We must keep in mind that we can't really compare BOS Estimates with ATAR Calculator estimates that are based on your actual HSC Marks unless the BOS estimates were ones done after HSC results came out (which not many people do).
