    Essay Format and Structure

"so belonging must be compensated on ones own terms:" Is there a neater way of expressing this? " individuals who don't belong can compensate for it by belonging on their own terms" - Is this paradoxical? To belong on ones own terms suggests a state of belonging where the individual enforces...

What does show not tell mean for creative writing?

A lot of those actions that you say are 'showing' simply describe the process in more detail. Personally I hate the term 'show don't tell' in terms of fiction, because it's so loosely applied. It's a wishy-washy term. It's necessary to balance your language, otherwise it comes across as dense...

English Extension 2! Where to start?

I don't think I had 15. More like (thinks)...1 for viva voce...then restart 2... then restart 3... then restart for 'REPORT' assessment 4... then restart 5.. redraft of that 6.. some small edits but that was it. But I don't know what you counted as a separate draft. Also I didn't have many...

How messy is your handwriting allowed to get in english?

Those sorts of books have terrible handwriting styles that only look 'somewhat' neat if they are blown-up to 5x normal size. When you use them in an exam they look childish. These books are to blame for most of the ugly handwriting in NSW students

English Extension 2! Where to start?

yeah you can put a plan in. You can also put in the full word-length versions with teachers comments on them, then write something on the side as to the 'direction' you're going to take after 'reflecting' on their feedback.

Writing an essay when asked to compose an interview/feature article

enough speculation. Is it that hard to write a practice in a separate form? If you can be bothered memorising so many essays it shouldn't be an unbelievable effort to write a speech or two. Besides, the analysis is going to be exactly the same.

English Extension 2! Where to start?

markers just flick through your journal. Can you imagine them reading them all back-to-front? There's 2000~ and they're usually 100+ pages long... The only thing that made me use mine was because it was marked in school assessments

How messy is your handwriting allowed to get in english?

"a sense of belonging is often relvant"? rlvant? You should still bother to spell the words. Also, do you think you can sustain this for 2 hours in paper 2? A more accurate test is to time yourself writing out an entire paper 1/2 and seeing how many words you write in the 2 hours. That shows...

How hard is it to get a 90+ mark in English?

Though different texts often demonstrate different points. It's fine to do text by text paragraphs if you make significant links in the topic sentences. One problem with integrating all the texts in every paragraph is that people tend to cherry-pick quotes, which leads to a superficial...

English Extension 2! Where to start?

If you're doing frankenstein for module A that has a lot to do with the Gothic genre, so there are many links there, any 'background research' on frankenstein can also contribute to your MW (two birds one stone). But what are all your texts? All schools do different texts

Ending a Creative on a sad note.

'Done well' - to be more specific than this, don't kill the protagonist if it's in 1st person. Also don't turn into a ghost. Markers absolutely hate this.

    Should English be compulsory??

Yes. You can't write 'I don't want to write a speech' on the day.

Ending a Creative on a sad note.

Think what would be evocative for a middle-aged woman - most likely your marker. (Yes, I know there are a lot of younger teachers, but consider that it's a lot easier to be a marker if you're an older teacher, since you've probably done it before). Also, the senior markers are almost certainly...

How hard is it to get a 90+ mark in English?

michaeljennings: I go to Baulko, a selective school full of asians and last year we had 138 people out of 200 get 90+, so I think a person ranked as high as you are at a top 3 school would get a band 6 ^^^ do you mean this? All there is to english is giving the teacher practise essays and...

How many related texts do you think you will be in english paper 1?

most likely one. They do this because they want more detail and less cursory reference. Maybe they've realised that 40 minutes isn't a lot of time for most people to deconstruct 3 texts.

How hard is it to get a 90+ mark in English?

You look at how many people get band 6s each year, and thus if your ranking is within that number, chances are you will also get a band6. Teachers mark consistently across years, so ranking is a good indicator relative to the HSC result. I know at my school the number for english has been fairly...

Feedback from teachers on english teachers!

You get used to it. Most of them have awful handwriting but one has quite pretty handwriting - I copied her style. Also they type up the feedback sheets. The feedback on essays is always so cursory. Like: "You have good flow (mark)" or "More evidence (mark)" or "Come to a deeper understanding of...
