Queensland Universities

Brisbane

Perpetually warm and sunny, Brisbane has a lot to offer. It’s Australia’s third largest city, which means there are plenty of places to eat, drink and shop. If you’re visiting before you move, there are also a lot of great hotels in the CBD and along the river and on Kangaroo Point. Additionally, there are always things to see and do – from gigs and festivals through to live sporting events.

Compared with Sydney, it’s more affordable to live in Brisbane. And the city’s bus and ferry system makes it easy to get around (it’s also possible to hire a bike). Griffith University, The University of Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology are all centrally located near the Brisbane CBD.

When you need a break from study, head over to Fortitude Valley. Here you’ll find a number of bars, restaurants and nightclubs that will keep you entertained.Find flight to Brisbane

Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is home to Bond University, as well as one of Griffith University’s campuses. It’s a great place to study because the weather is generally always warm, and you’re close to the beach.

Surfers Paradise is the main hub of the Gold Coast, however it is usually crowded with tourists as it’s a favourite for International visitors, surfers and families due to the beaches, theme parks and large beach-side hotels. That’s fine if you don’t mind a bit of hustle and bustle, but if you would prefer to live somewhere quieter, you should consider finding a place a little further down the coast in the suburb of Robina.

Rockhampton

Three hours north of Brisbane, Rockhampton is a friendly town with a tropical climate.

Central Queensland University is located approximately 40 kilometres inland from the Capricorn Coast, in North Rockhampton. It’s a great place to study as the peace and quiet will help you to focus. But when you need a break, there are plenty of things to do – including snorkelling, bungee jumping, or visiting the Rockhampton Zoo.

Townsville

Right up the top of Queensland’s east coast is Townsville – a tropical beachside town. This is where you’ll find James Cook University.

Townsville is a very beautiful place to live (it’s surrounded by rainforests, beaches and coral reefs) however it can make you feel a little isolated. On the plus side, it provides the perfect setting for focusing on your studies.

Toowoomba

Toowoomba is about an hour and a half west of Brisbane. It’s Australia’s second largest inland town, with a strong economy and a thriving community. The cost of living is reasonable, which makes it a great choice for a student, and the weather is reliably warm and sunny.

The University of Southern Queensland is located slightly south of the centre of town. Because of Toowoomba’s size, you should be able to find casual employment in a shop or a cafe – plus there are generally always things to see and do.

Sunshine Coast

The University of the Sunshine Coast is located in the suburb of Sippy Downs, which is about an hour north of Brisbane. If you love the beach, you’ll enjoy living here – as the uni is only a ten minute drive away from the coast.

The Sunshine Coast offers an easy going and outdoorsy lifestyle, plus a good selection of restaurants, shops and bars. And if you want to visit Brisbane, it’s only a short train ride away.

It’s worthwhile visiting the city you’re considering before making your final decision and it’s quite easy to grab a flight to Brisbane and then connect to the surrounding areas. Webjet offer a range of cheap hotels in the Gold CoastBrisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

Bond University was created by the Bond University Act of the Queensland Parliament in April 1987. The Act prescribed the responsibilities of the university and established the Council of Bond University, which also acts as the Board of Bond University Limited (a company limited by guarantee).

In 1999, Bond University purchased through its own resources the freehold of its purpose-built campus. Since securing ownership of its campus, Bond University has begun a process of controlled growth. Teaching began at the Robina campus in May 1989 with 322 students. The current student enrolment is just above 2000. Bond University offers personalised tuition and is committed to maintaining a ratio of equivalent full-time students to academic staff of no more than 10 to one. USQ is a dynamic, young University that offers award programs at undergraduate and postgraduate level by on-campus, off-campus or online study. Many students choose different modes of delivery for different periods of their study. The University believes that flexible delivery is about giving people what they want, where they want it, when they want it, in their style, in their place, in their time. We are regional, flexible and international.

USQ began its existence 32 years ago as an Institute of Technology and, later, as a College of Advanced Education. It was redesignated as a University from 1990 without amalgamating with any other university.

USQ was Joint Winner of the Good Universities Guides’ University of the Year: 2000-2001 Award. In 1999, USQ won the Inaugural Award for Excellence from the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE), as a world leader in “dual mode” (on-campus and off-campus) education.

USQ has a well-resourced main campus in the city of Toowoomba, and many regional support offices throughout Australia and in other countries where we offer our awards programs. We also have a well-equipped campus at Hervey Bay, serving the Wide Bay region, and a Brisbane Campus. You are welcome to visit our campuses or contact us by phone or fax during business hours.

As at November 2003, the University has approximately 25,000 enrolments, including over 7,400 international students. More than 100 nationalities are represented and about 5,000 international students study USQ programs in their home countries.

The University has strong research programs in such areas as biotechnology, agricultural and environmental engineering, sustainable land use, the design and development of fibre composites, numerical modelling and simulation, e-business and e-commerce, school leadership, children’s literacy, theatre studies, literature and regional history. It is renowned for its performing and visual arts programs and is a world leader in online learning technologies and pedagogy.

Overall, the University has embraced the need for change implicit in an educational environment that is highly competitive, and dominated by the evolution of global communications technologies. It intends to remain fast, flexible and fluid in meeting the needs of learners throughout Australia and internationally. It will meet these needs without compromise to the quality and integrity of its programs and standards.

The establishment of University of the Sunshine Coast in 1996 created the first public university on a greenfield site in Australia for 23 years. Mooloolah River National Park adjoins the University’s 100 hectare site. Wild kangaroos reside on campus, and are recognised as a symbol of the University’s stance on environmental sustainability.

The University was founded to service the needs of the Sunshine Coast community, one of Australia’s fastest growing regions. More than 500 students were enrolled at the University when it opened in February 1996, and now in its seventh year of operation, the Sippy Downs campus accommodates over 3 000 students, 400 staff, and 270 international students from 18 countries.

The University’s charter is to provide Sunshine Coast residents access to higher education. One third of students are the first in their family to attend a university, and there is a high proportion of mature aged students at the University.

The student population size ensures personal attention and a focus on student support. Graduates have recognised the benefits of such a learning environment, giving their experience at University of the Sunshine Coast a five-star rating 1.

The three faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Science offer over 50 undergraduate and postgraduate programs, and more than 450 courses, many of them developed and taught in concert with the region’s industries.

The University’s research activities have been enhanced by the establishment of the Sunshine Coast Research Institute for Business Enterprise (SCRIBE); a field research station at Beerwah; National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre; and Fraser Island Research and Education Centre. Queensland’s Premier officially launched the University’s $7m Innovation Centre and business incubator facility in June 2001.
