New South Wales and ACT Universities

Sydney

Australia’s largest city is home to some of the world’s best universities. Close to the city centre, you’ll find The University of Sydney, The University of Technology Sydney, and The University of New South Wales. Each of these universities provides a wide range of course offerings within a vibrant urban setting.

Meanwhile, the Australian Catholic University, Macquarie University and the University of Western Sydney have campuses located throughout the greater Sydney region.

Sydney is a big and busy place, which has its advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, there are a multitude of great places to eat and drink, famous sites like the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, Darling Harbour and Bondi Beach, and you’ll get to meet plenty of people. The downside is that it can be a fairly expensive place to live if you’re a student. If you’re visiting before you move, find a flight to Sydney and a Sydney hotel on Webjet.

ACT

There are two major universities in the Australian Capital Territory: the Australian National University and the University of Canberra. Both provide a world-class standard of tertiary education within modern campuses.

Charles Sturt University also has a campus in Canberra (the School of Theology).

Newcastle

Located about two hours north of Sydney, Newcastle is a sunny coastal town that is relaxed and friendly. The University of Newcastle offers undergraduate degrees in business, law, education, arts, engineering, medicine, science and IT – as well as a range of postgraduate courses.

Wollongong

Wollongong is a couple of hours’ drive south of Sydney. It offers an excellent standard of living – with affordable accommodation options located not far from the beach.

The University of Wollongong provides undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in business, arts, law, engineering, science, medicine, and social sciences.

Central NSW

Charles Sturt University has campuses in Bathurst, Dubbo, Wagga Wagga and Lismore. Each campus provides state-of-the-art facilities within a picturesque setting. These campuses give students who live in regional areas the opportunity to study at a tertiary level.

Northern NSW

Offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in arts, science, business and law, Southern Cross University has regional campuses located in Lismore and Coffs Harbour.

Further inland (just over two hours from Coffs Harbour), the University of New England has a campus in Armidale – offering over 200 undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Southern NSW

Albury-Wodonga straddles the border of NSW and Victoria. This is where you’ll find one of Charles Sturt University’s regional campuses, offering courses in accounting, business, education, science, IT, nursing, and more.

Callaghan NSW 2308
Tel: (02) 4921 5000
Fax: (02) 4960 1661

The University of Newcastle, established in 1965, has a student population of just over 20,000. We offer over 150 undergraduate and graduate courses, delivered via five Faculties – Business and Law; Education and Arts; Engineering and Built Environment; Health; and Science and Information Technology. The University is an exceptional achiever in research with an international reputation for expertise in innovative approaches to teaching and learning. With campuses in both the Central Coast and Hunter regions of NSW, we serve a community of around a million people.

There are two main campuses, both of which have won national awards for architecture and sympathetic environmental management. The larger campus at Callaghan lies about 12 kilometres from the Centre of Newcastle on a beautiful natural bushland site, and this is where the great majority of our students study. The other main campus is at Ourimbah on the Central Coast, about half way between Newcastle and Sydney. It is part of an innovative joint venture between the University, the Hunter Institute (TAFE NSW) and the Central Coast Community College. Currently there are about 1,800 University of Newcastle students studying at Ourimbah but as a new campus earmarked for growth, this number is expected to grow considerably over the next five years.

Although not a campus in the strict sense of the word, we have a significant presence on two sites within the Newcastle C.B.D. Our School of Music and Conservatorium are located in the Civic Theatre precinct, while our School of Law, Legal Centre, and Graduate School of Business are located in University House, a landmark art-deco sandstone building directly opposite Civic Park. It is an ideal location for many of our students who study part-time and who work close by. And although the University’s medical and nursing programs are based on the Callaghan campus, they also operate out of major clinical, teaching, and research facilities at several hospitals and health centres in the Hunter and Central Coast regions.
