When you look at Light's character, no matter how intelligent he is, he's deluded. While his plans may have been feasible he always made the same mistake of having that childish urge to reveal himself before his victims died. L as well as Penbar and his wife both got that. He wanted his brilliance to be acknowledged, clearly he is and never will be L's equal.
L on the other hand is the pinnacle of awesome. He's epic. He is episome.
