Sometimes it's randomly allocated or you choose. I did psychology and some computing courses, they choose it for you. I did some other courses like arts and other computing courses (COMP2121), you get to choose.

Yeah he's very like that for COMP1911 (he taught this course last year and the years before) and he's doing it intentionally to incorporate learning to first year students, because after all, it is an introductory computing course. You'll probably have him again...
Re: UNSW chit chat thread 2017
Ah alright, well you could always watch the lectures from the previous years taught by Richard Buckland on Open Learning. The problem is that its a different course (1917 vs 1511) - but most of the material should be the same.
Re: UNSW chit chat thread 2017
Why is it bad? If it's a problem with the lecturer, you can always go to the alternative one that runs exactly at the same time.
PSYC1001 is ez, the mid and final exams are pretty much a port of the lecture and tute slides. If you can remember that, you'll have no problem with the exams. For SONA, you can do those extra hours to obtain 4 extra points which is by far the easiest free points you can ever get in uni.

MATH1081 ends with a nice topic called Graph Theory. Quite straight forward and fun as well.
In terms of class test, do the past class test in the booklet, they are pretty much identical to the ones you'll be getting.
