literally i need to active recall with someone so i remember. ok lets go the spartans would randomly wage war on the helots every year and like deccimate them for no reason

yes the ephorates would wage war on them every year. the ephorates also made a secret-police style squad of eiren men who would 'be dispatched in the countryside at night armed with daggers' according to Plutarch and would kill strong-looking helots who worked in the fields. this was part of a broader mission to quell revolts by a) removing helots who would pose a phsyical threat to Spartans, and b) demoralising them and making them scared, forcing them into submission.
