Hey everyone,

After talking to a few different people, I have come across a range of different perspectives about if tutoring is necessary in the HSC, especially for those aiming for high ATAR's and doing hard subjects such as ext. math and physics. Is tutoring for these courses really as necessary as some people say it is?

depends tbh

some people say tutoring isnt necessary as long as you put in the work (which is mostly true) but tutoring gives you the easy way out and gives you an edge over ur classmates - especially at a selective school

if ur aiming for competitive courses in uni like med then i would say tutoring is worth it as it saves you a lot of time esp since ur studying for ucat too
but if ur atar aim isnt particularly high and u wanna do a regular course in uni then tutoring imho isnt worth it as most people can get a 95+ by means of studying and past papers

This depends on your ATAR aim/degree aim as mentioned above. Medicine is a quite competitive field of study and to guarantee yourself an opportunity to study medicine, you will need to maximise your resources and study time (which will typically require tutoring).

Generally speaking. tutoring usually helps, but that doesn't mean that you won't be able to achieve great results by studying on your own (i.e. it doesn't mean that it's a must). Achieving good results and performing consistently well without tutoring requires that you regularly study and stay up-to-date with your content, allowing you to perform well in your assessment tasks/exams. Whenever you feel you are facing difficulties (this applies to all of your subjects), you should ask your teacher for assistance as soon as possible so that you eliminate any risk of falling behind.

In normal cases, where tutoring might become needed is if you feel that studying on your own isn't helping and if your results are not as good as you want them to be. There's also the possibility that you might be struggling to fully understand certain concepts as well as having a teacher whose explanations/assistance don't really help much.

I hope this helps! :D

I had tutoring for physics but no, tutoring isn't essential for HSC

If you are doing well and understanding your work in year 11, do you think tutoring on the year 11 syllabus is a waste of time/money?

I go tutoring for maths and the sciences that I am taking which has helped but I find that I am actually doing better in subjects which I don't do tutoring for but as I mentioned I do go tutoring mainly because the teachers I have for that subject is shit so it definitely does help. I don't think tutoring is necessary but I suggest it if your not the person to be motivated or the type to self learn and take in the content since year 11 and 12 is definitely a lift from junior years

That could likely be the case, since you are already performing well and understanding the content, not to mention that none of the marks you receive for your year 11 assessment tasks/exams will count towards your ATAR. In such a case, you should probably think more about year 12 and determine whether or not you will need tutoring, because year 12 is the year you definitely want to be performing well in.

I know this is really late but most HSC coaching to me sounds like a scam. If free or low cost alternatives (below 100 AUD exist) like past papers, youtube tutorials, the Science Ready website, syllabus based revision and study methods I don't get why people go to them. E.g. ACE HSC coaching charges 1,210 AUD per term (lmao for just paper cardboard, videos and a classroom setting), Matrix charges at least 1200 AUD per term for their HSC in-person class courses, Dr Du charges 1000-1932 AUD per term for ext 2 maths class, phys, chem etc. It's all a scam to me. Just hire high atar private tutors for 50+ AUD an hour. Lmao all these places just repackage past papers into fancy branding. In that case if private tutors are more affordable, can give advice towards what works for the hsc and have more impact per hour due to their ability to give targeted help why would you do coaching? It just doesn't seem practical. With coaching money you could pay uni fees lmao. However if you do insist on doing tutoring just get a free trial of the lessons and DO NOT JUMP INTO THEM BLINDLY. IF YOU DO COACHING FOR EVERY SUBJECT IT BECOMES A MONEY WASTING TIME SINK (minimum 7+ hours a week) THAT REDUCES PERSONAL REVISION AND STUDY TIME; THE SOURCE OF WHERE MARKS COME FROM.

Also i heard that doing just past papers, knowing all syllabus dotpoints necessary for a particular assessment, and learning from mistakes = 90+ atar.

Depends on your goal for HSC. 90+ atar, I don't really think tutoring might even be necessary, as long as you are very good at self-studying via notes, past papers etc. If you want to get something like even 99 atar, you might have to do tutoring as pretty much all people in this range have tutoring as a prerequisite though tutoring still doesn't even guarantee you do well.

Also my private tutor (HSC 2020) got a 98 atar without coaching/tutoring for phys, chem, 4 unit maths (just past papers) and only did tutoring for english advanced. He said he had a friend who got a 99.7 atar without tutoring.

Honestly, depends on so many factors.
- What are your goals?
- How well do you self-learn?
- How good are your school teachers
- Which subjects do you do?

If you’re aiming for Med, it’s very rare for students to get that type of ATAR without some extra help. Of course, it does happen, but it’s rare.

There’s a reason why high performing people in athletics, business, life in general have mentors and coaches and are part of masterminds and communities!

coolcat discovers that not everyone fits into trends??
4u is straight up harder than 3u so it's surprising when someone gets better in 4u than 3u

i reckon a possible reason is that 3u 2022 was just straight up harder than 4u 2022 and 4u 2022 had some insanely good alignment (like 61 raw was an e4 💀), hence higher 4u mark than 3u mark

4u 2022 was the hardest 4u exam till date btw (which is what the aligment indicates) definitely harder than the 3u exam
