Help me pick a degree (1 Viewer)

Hey guys, Half way through year 12 and still don't have a clear understanding or aim towards what course i would like to do at uni so am consolidating fellow BOSers to give me some recommendations . Here is a brief outline to some things that might help.

- enjoy engineering in general, much more interested in field of computing, technology, machines especially cars and automobiles.
- enjoy business subjects since i find it easy and hear that jobs are plentiful in areas such as finance.
- enjoy sciences, particularly physics.
- aiming to get into UNSW or UTS. (current ranks give an estimate of mid 80s Atar, but some factors including flexible entry i.e. inpUTS, EAS, questionnaire and bonus points could give a significant boost)
- degree should have good career prospects and a respectable starting salary.
- degrees offering undergraduate scholarships/cadetships/bonus marks/awards are more preferred.


I am particularly interested in the combined B.Eng / B.Bus @UTS but hear that the two degrees are very different and would be useless for employers since they cater for separate fields. I have looked into mechatronics but a friend of mine who does it said it is boring and transferred into studying marketing...lol.

Yes i would, it seems to satisfy all my needs haha, but wouldn't employers want a person specialised in a specific area rather than a variety of areas?

Would you like to do your masters one day perhaps a PhD? And yes you have a good point, employers would want a new graduate to have a specialised field of study so I guess it increases your chances of employment

Ok, and i have not thought about a masters or a PhD, i think that is something you decide on once you are already into your course. Regarding mechatronics i want to avoid it and stick to the major degrees, i.e. mechanical, electric, software...I want to do mechanical with something else.

My careers advisor is dumb, i went to her a few weeks ago and just said do what you enjoy...

There's an engineering info day at UNSW coming up soon.

You pick 3 types of engineering you want to explore, e.g. computer science, chemical engineering, civil engineering etc. And I guess on the day they tell you more about it and give you an idea what you will learn.

That could be useful if you're undecided on the type of engineering you want to do, or just if you enjoy engineering in general?


Good luck though, I'm aiming for UNSW CS degree. But I'm a bit worried I won't get 91... lucky they have EAS. I know that requires an interview.

Mine told me I could easily do a 2/3unit maths bridging course but doing a physics bridging course is apparently too ''hard''


My friend is doing Mechatronics with honours? And is really enjoying it (well except the 60 page report group assignment)

not particularly interested in electrical engineering

well idk about other universities, but if you do engineering at UNSW you will be completing core units in first year so you have the whole year (possibly 1.5-2) years to decide what major you want to do.

you can't double major in engineering, except for some exceptions like civil/enviro, civil/mining, etc

but yeah you don't have to decide now.
