If its really good quality maybe...
I'm a slow writer too, but I wouldn't be able to get full marks with 1000000000 words anyway. Looking at previous years (exam books), I'm pretty sure most of the essays are over 1000 words, or 950 minimum.

I think maybe 900-950 will suffice. 850 is a little bit of a stretch but I think it's possible.

with 850 words it is possible to get 18/20 but I doubt ay higher though. But remember its all about quality rather than quantity.
All of my essays are approximately 880 words and I still got 18/20 for all of my essays

Bull shit, you don't need more than 900 to get full marks. A 750 word, well written essay can get 20/20 but it needs to be pretty much perfect. 850 is fine to get full marks.

agreed. for CSSA trials my mate writes no more than 750 words per essay and his lowest mark was a 17/20 for the modules. marker's comments were never about the length.
whereas i wrote 850 words for my Module B response and was criticised by the same marker lol.. anything is possible.

If your essay isn't dense enough with lots of textual detail/contextual discussion/conceptual shit you need 900 or more. If you're really good 850 will do - but this depends on the person.

I've been told that, if you have an amazing essay...if anything...you should get extra marks for making it more concise than the 1000+ word essays.

I wrote around 750 words for my module C and I got 19/20.

Through the marker's comment was that I didn't have enough textual references/ examples. so yeah. 850 words should be possible for 20/20.

850 / 150 = 5 pages and 2 thirds, definitely enough for 20/20.

If you've got roughly 20 techniques + quotes or so in an 800-850 word essay surely that would be considered instead of a lengthier one.

Some markers actually get their first impressions from how many pages you write (stupid.. I know. Well at least in my school )
I know this kid in my class who's really good at English, but his writing is TINY (still legible) so he fills up about 2 pages or 2 and a half pages but his essays are about 1000 words each. If I recall, he fits like 20 words on a line. our class teacher had to argue to the other teachers that he just writes small as they didn't give him a very good mark in the first place. Then he got extra marks.
but in hsc, I'm pretty sure you cant quiry or argue for marks.
Eh.. maybe its just the teachers in my school. But don't forget, they're still hsc markers.

I have like 12 in one essay .... is that enough?

The thing with techniques is that they are mostly void if they don't contribute to your thesis/ideas and overall answering of the question. I got fairly good trial essay marks (16upwards/20) in my two papers however one of the teachers commented "I would like to see more development of your ideas, rather than having so many" i.e. I could quote large amounts of Shakespeare and Harwood (+techniques) but that's not so important if they don't connect to your thesis and substantiate your response.

tl;dr - having a good number of quotes is important, but better, more sustained ideas at the expense of a couple of quotes is totally fine and probably ideal.

Teachers often tell me to not mindlessly write about whatever, actually write with a PURPOSE and analyse with reference to the composer's purpose.
