You don’t have to spend long in holiday traffic to realise more thought needs to go into speed zones around Australia.
Cruising along the Hume Highway (impressively now with more wire rope barriers to stop head-ons and impacts with trees, even if bikers understandably aren't fans) in light traffic on a sunny day, for example, and it’s clear there are sections that could easily handle speeds of 120 or 130km/h. Most of the dual carriageway (which is almost the entire stretch these days) could easily cope with higher speeds in the right conditions.

There’s good vision, smooth bitumen and long on- and off-ramps, all of which are conducive to higher speeds – and getting somewhere in less time.

At the very least governments should investigate more European-style variable speed limits, which could impose slower speeds at night and in the rain while allowing higher speeds when it makes sense.

We already have variable limits on some inner-city freeways - it's time to expand them to country areas, allowing people to travel places more efficiently. Cars are, after all, a means of traveling places quickly.

Agreed. Governments just want to frustrate ppl to make them speed so that they can make more money.
They don't want a change especially on the Hume HIghway as there is aerial speed monitoring there, which yields an even higher amt of revenue

With todays vehicles safety standards speeds should be increased, even if its variable, but that in turn means L/P1/P2 speed restrictions need to be revised because entering a 110KM zone whilst doing 80KM is tedious already.

p speed limits on highways is really bad and results in heaps of cunts trying to over take you so bad

australia has far more diurnally active land animals than europe (germany), and far less traffic on intercity highways, ergo less deterrence for road dwelling animals. this isn't a problem if you have a roobar, in which case you can mow them down all day, but most people don't. reaction times are also obviously an issue in this regard. we have far less driver training, and on average, drive older cars.

where higher speed limits might be implemented, it would be in very few areas and intermittent, leading to confusion. we also have a far bigger problem with loose gravel and poorly designed roads.

that being said i see no reason for there to be a review process for the speed limit of certain stretches of road (highways), with the possibility of increasing speed limits in certain areas.

Like the time they decided to cut the Newell Highway back to 100 from 110 and it lasted 18 months before they went "lol dat was a bad idea"

the reintroduction of 110 on the newell was 100% proposed to gain votes for the nationals from farmers who were upset about having 50 mins added to a cross state trip it make 0 sense
dropping the speed to 100 was introduced originally to reduce to speed conflicts between trucks (far higher percentage of trucks on the newell compared to other highways) which are limited to 100 and cars.

when you have different limits for everyone, it leads to conflicts and people do dumb shit like overtaking on crests/corners etc because they cant handle being stuck doing 100 for 2 extra minutes. because the newell is shit and poorly designed and has fuck all overtaking lanes (cost like $100k per 100m to construct) it was a pretty solid idea to drop it to 100km/h

well the hume highway between albury and cambelltown probably could be 130km/h easily but i havent driven on many other roads (none) where it would be a good idea. it would probably not work out though because having caravans, L platers and trucks doing 80 and other people doing 130+ is a terrible idea

also driving faster increases fatigue rather than decreasing it btw guys

m8 kangaroos only account for like 40% of collisions. wombats, cassowaries, emus, boars, and reptiles can all fuck your shit up. possums and koalas can leave a mess too. more collisions with animals occur at night than at day, and 80% of collisions are on 100km/h+ roads. the situation is similar in the US. also fair point, its hard to call kangaroos diurnal, because they're just lazy cunts in general (which is why they're getting run over no doubt). crepuscular is more appropriate, and i imagine when most impacts take place, but idk if there are any accurate statistics on time of collision. the autobahn is also comparatively well lit.

its not surprising that there are x number of impacts with boar on german highways. the volume of intercity commuting there is insane (and the population is 4 times larger too). my point was that the autobahn analogy is ridiculous. the US is in the same situation as us, the highest speed limit over there is 130km/h (and most intercity is 110km/h like here), because our roads infrastructure is so different to europe's.

there should be a review process for certain roads though. the snowy mountains highway through morans crossing and glenbog should be unlimited

you were the one who raised the diurnal point lol which really has no bearing on the discussion because a far higher percentage of animal related crashes occur at night compared to all crashes

yeah of course the analogy is ridiculous. it was probably raised by the same people who try to justify hsr everywhere because JAPANS HAS IT

well there is a review process for all roads, its just that the maximum allowable speed is 110km/h at the moment. It would not be hard at all for RMS to review the speed zoning guidelines to include a provision for 130km/h speed zones but obviously more emphasis would have to be placed on the dangers of animal impacts (as well as clear zones on shoulders etc) than in other speed zones.

the hume would meet the guidelines in most places which is what this article is suggesting, but i doubt most other roads would.

the road through guy fawkes national park should also be unlimited
