Hey guys, hope all is well.
I'm one of the 10 students that chose English Extension in my school, I did not choose it because it scales well but i chose it because it has been one of my favorite subjects since year 7 and since I like Creative Writing it was a no brainer.

I was just wondering on what to expect from Ext. and Adv?

Any comments, hints will be greatly appreciated
This may also help my other people into what to expect

Thanks a lot :D

Depends on what elective you get. You can do something as dry as Romanticism or something as interesting as Postmodernism. Depends on what your school picks for you to do.

So just in a nutshell, what are the electives that I may be given and just a general thing of what they are about..
but Postmodernism sounds cool lol

Look at the syllabus, I only know what I did and a few others by name only, and what I did was 'Textual Dynamics'. That's like postmodernism.

Other things are called 'Crime Writing', 'After the Bomb', 'Romanticism' (I think is another one)...

EDIT: http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=8

Electives are:
Life Writing, Crime Writing, Science Fiction
After the Bomb, Romanticism, Navigating the Global
Textual Dynamics, Language and Gender

You pick one from those nine.

As shadow says it depends on your elective, so everyone's going to do different things.

I did texts, culture and values in year 11. We studied Shakespeare's King Lear, appropriations of the play into different contexts, and the influences of culture and values on the representation.

In year 12, I did Navigating the Global. It dealt with the blurring of distinctive cultural boundaries, the response of people to the changing modern realities, and ways of thinking. The ways of thinking that we concentrated on were postmodernism (which focused on things such as a borderless world) and postcolonialism (which focused on the voice of a colonised society speaking through colonial oppression).

I think that what you should be expecting from extension english is the ways culture influence texts and the way these influences are represented within the text. It's a lot more in depth than anything in advanced where you can get away with little in depth analysis most of the time. In advanced, your essays are focused more on the text and the values the text represents, whilst in extension, you are focusing more on the values and using the text to back up your thesis.

It says what they are about in the rubric in the syllabus. Incidentally, postmodernism is not an elective by itself and is a way of thinking. And you will be doing whatever your class is doing. At our school we didn't get given a choice.

And yes. The extension HSC exam is 2 hours and only has 2 questions. An essay question, and a creative writing question, each worth 25 marks.

I had to do a speech for the HSC period about how our prescribed text played with the usual way on how a story was told.

Is extension somewhat philosophical? As in sometimes your writing has to include philosophy? I've seen a few example essays and they talk about some really intriguing ideas and perspectives.

Only if your module has philosophical topics in it. Mine didn't - the closest I got was talking about different theories about how a story should be told.

I hope the module my school does has philosophy, it's so fun to write about it.

I love eng adv but hate EE1.
If you like the structured-ness of adv and memorise essays to do well then just give up on EE1 now LOL
Me and my best friend love prepare essays for eng adv and we came 1st and 6th at a top10 selective
But we both came in the bottom 25% of the grade for Ext1
Ive dropped it but she needs it for EE2 but she basically gave up on it and is just doing it cos she has to

Duh, because people who memorise essays are very silly. Serves you right, to be honest.
