Australia (for the better part of my young life) has been preached to me as a "multicultural" nation. But at the same time it has been said that we still have a specific "Australian" way of life.

What *is* multiculturalism, really? Is it a democratic nation with high influxes of migrant cultures taking hold within a previously culturally monotonous society in a peaceful, welcoming way? Or is it nonsensical leftist propaganda to promote cheap labour importation from foreign lands?

And finally: should there be legislation created in order to stop racism and racial slurs and vilification?

Free speech is paramount no speech should be censored.

We live in a plurality, it is good.

Hell no, you should be able to say whatever the fuck you want, if people wanna go crying crocodile tears then they can eat a dick.
People shouldn't have a right to not be insulted, just grow the fuck up and get over it.

multiculturism is simply a society that accepts EVERYONE regardless of their culture (multi + culture, derr).

to create legislation that bans racial slurs and vilification is silly. Why not ban EVERY little thing that hurts peoples feelings?
australia is an egalitarian society, is it not? everyone is (or should be) accepted, but you cant expect everyone to be liked, and if someone goes around teasing x's for being x's then they're stupid and people from x country shouldnt bother with that idiot, as long as said idiot isnt breaking any laws, like physically attacking them or refusing to do business against people from x country, thats illegal right?

Racial slurs are just as bad as any other stereotype.

Multiculturalism = good
Freedom of speech = good

People don't realize that when there's talk about banning racial slurs, its paving the way for going a lot further and consequently further impinging on freedom of speech.

exactly.

I think Australia really shoots its self in the foot because we open the doors for multiculturalism but then we have so many issues with over compenstating and providing for some minorities and not for others. Or we have people trying to impose their beliefs on us when we open our doors to them. Similiarily we have some majorities that are overtly catered for and others not (I'm talking about you hillsong).

people only have a cry about racial slurs etc because they can

if there was no legal avenue such as anti discrimination laws etc then there would be no legal reproach for calling someone a nigger other than possible social ramifications, and then people wouldnt get all up in arms over it, and we would all get along with each other

anti-vilification laws are necessary to stop people from inciting violence against particular races

also, the slippery slope argument is always a logical fallacy

does this mean "come at me bro" is also inciting violence? =p
inciting violence isn't an excuse imo. people should have enough self control.

if something is said that offends people from X background, and they retaliate with violence ie BREAKING THE LAW, then that cant be allowed and they must be punished!
but then not sure what happens to the offender... should they be punished somehow for just saying some words?
this becomes a case of bullying. if happens at a workplace then the manager would take appropriate measures. if in a school/university then approrpirate people will take apprirpirpriaete measures.
if out in the street, then who gives a fack, probably never gonna see that random person again.

without the laws people like the Australian Protectionist Party would be pumping out mass amounts of material to generate hate towards muslims and brown people in general

and promoting those attitudes leads indirectly to violence against them

I know sexuality and race are different things but indulge me all the same.
I was working in admin, when my boss decided to send in a little help to speed things up. Mrs. Helpful and me hadn’t spoken much in the past and she, being isolated to her desk, was desperate for conversation: Where I grew up, where I performed and who I was dating. The last question inevitably leading her to ask,

“So when did you come out?” A common question; sixteen is the answer.

“Wow. That is crazy.” Oh, I guess it is a bit…

“Your dad must have been so embarrassed!”

And there it was. Out fell my chest, up came my lunch. I could feel my skin glowing red but I tried to keep a straight face as she barreled onwards.

“What does he do?” He is a sales-rep and coached football for…

“Football?! Oh god, he would have been so embarrassed in front of his mates.”

I folded my envelopes quietly, nodding as she lamented that The Shire was at least a safe place for a child to grow up and that she would not know what to do if her child was gay – it would be too stressful for her.

It sat with me and then came tumbling forth like a wardrobe full of old beige cargo pants you thought you’d never see again. She had pierced my thickened skin and tore me apart.

The following day she greeted me with a picture,

“Do you think he’s gay?” I don’t know.

“But you guys ‘know’ don’t you?” No.

“Where do you live?” Inner-west.

“I thought you’d live in Potts Point with the rest of the poofters!” She cackled.

Later that day I made a complaint to my boss.
That was an excerpt from a piece written by Triple J's Brendan Maclean on Mia Freedman's website, question is should Maclean have been able to make a complaint? Or was he just being soft?
