Maths Ext 2? (2 Viewers)

Hi guys,

Im doing Maths Ext 2 for the 2011 HSC but im wondering whether i should drop it and stick to Maths Ext 1 as this way your 2u mark counts.

I guess i'm a little worries about the scaling system screwing me over or myself just under-performing and ending up with a worse mark than if i was to do 3u.

We have not had a 4u examination yet and i received 98% for my 2u exam (1/~25) and and about 80% in my 3u exam (2/8).

Any help is greatly appreciated

when I was in yr11 I would have said stick to 3unit ( which I ended up doing). However, looking back this probably wasnt the best decision. You only need to get in 25 percentile in 4unit to get 86% , that is you only need to beat 25% of the candititure to get a hsc mark of 86/100, its practically impossible to fail

You should try the extension 2 exam first, see how you go and if you're not doing well, like under 50%, then drop it, or at least see if you can make an improvement in the next exam..

In general, you should be aiming for at least 50s-60s, preferably the 70s range, though it depends on your school..

but in some cases, it would be better to ace 2U and 3U rather than do badly in 4U, in which 4U would not benefit your ATAR..

btw what course are you aiming for?

Ext2 requires a lot of work, not just commenting on the difficulty of the course but the amount of effort required is unreal

^ it is wise words, you would probably get like 75/100 for 4unit if you just got like 1/4 of the marks in the paper.

4unit integration is relatively easy if you are good at 3unit integration. It took me a whole 1 week to pick up 4unit integration in second semester uni math , and integration accounts for a bit over 1/8 of the paper, as it has the whole Q1 and 4unit integration is used in many other topics such as volumes etc.

complex numbers usually has a whole Q2 to itself, and most of those are fairly standard, if you cant get atleast 12/15 on complex numbers then you are a dumby.

and then just pick up a few marks on the graphing questions and you have probably scored 75/100, easily, most likely more then 75, its not a very good mark, but its not a terribly bad one either

Wait until you've completed at least one 4U assessment to see where you stand.

As people have said, try the exam and see how you go, then talk to your teacher about it.

I also recommend you give 4U a crack. Just as any subject, it requires its fair share of work - sometimes more so then others. Though with consistency, and a general interest in the course, achieving your desired mark (which I hope is an E4) is not out of range. But that's just what I think. :-3

At my school there was an accelerant that got 2nd in the state for 2 unit. He contemplated whether he should lose his 2U mark and do 4U or to keep his 2U mark.

He ended up doing 4 unit and got 7th in the state. Go figure...

Always pick 4U if you can. It's rigged as shit. Scaling is unreal, the work is fairly straightforward once you pick it up, and you can fuck up the exam and still do ok. I reckon I got like 90/120 in the 4U exam because I got 20-3/15 in Question 8 and I still ended up with 95 for my HSC for 4U. It also makes 3U look like a walk in the park.

That's a personal choice and completely up to you. I'm currently managing 12U with MX2 and I have plenty of time for study.

Just do one test See how you go. I had my doubts about 4u and was going to drop it but I ended up getting a 99% (which I think is a fluke :S So I'm going to wait till the Half Yearlies to make my decision). 4u scales well if you make it in the top 70% of the state in 4u, you are basically guaranteed a band 5 > (So I've heard)...

Some people exaggerate the difficulty of MX2. I was pretty scared of doing it at first, but it's not too bad. My teacher gives A LOT of homework (I reckon he's made us do 95% of the exercises in the Cambridge textbook throughout the year + plenty more) so if you spend AT LEAST 1 hour every night studying for MX2, you should be fine. I got about 71/120 for my trials (CSSA) but I managed to scrape a 90 for my exam and get an E4. From your 2U and 3U results it doesn't look like you'll struggle much in MX2 as long as you put in the effort.

The main thing Ext.2 Math requires is just constant effort, so if you're willing to do a little bit each day - keep it.

It'll make things a lot easier for 3U, too,

If you can truly understand concepts such that you can design challenging questions testing your understanding of said concepts, you should be fine with 4U.
