Asking q's during lectures (2 Viewers)

but dont do it repetitively within the one lecture. and don't speak so softly that no one else can hear and the question has to be asked many times.

i dont mind questions. if i am writing down something, it allows me to finish without missing anything the lecturer is saying. also if i already know the answer to the question, i can have a little mental break and relax for a minute

it really depends on what type of lecture you are in. i think tallkid is a comm student, babikakez is as well, so maybe the comm lectures have a different atmosphere kind of like "everyone shut the hell up and listen". but today my comp lecturer made a point of telling everyone that he wants us to ask questions

Personally, I don't mind the occasional question, but there was this one girl in my chem lectures in semester one of my first year that was constantly asking the stupidest questions EVERY SINGLE LECTURE. And I had her in my tute too and she was doing the same thing!

Everyone hated her. It wasn't fair that she was making everyone else stay longer, or miss out on content because the lecturer was explaining it to her and that she was constantly hogging the tutor's time.

To be safe, save it for the end of the lecture!!

If it's a law lecture, try to talk as much as possible, as some lecturers want input (but again this varies from lecturer to lecturer). For Commerce the general trend is for students to ask questions during the break (if you have one) or at the end (if the lecturer can be bothered staying around... :hammer:)

some idiot in my gened (called History of Mathematics) had to ask the lecturer how to do (student number) mod 4 on his calculator. wanted to find a button or some shit.

this was after the lecturer saying x mod y is t he remainder when x is divdied by y.

so conclusively, this dumbshit can't divide.

(Science student perspective) - imo, short questions are ok, especially if the lecturer pauses and actually asks 'Does anyone have any questions?' Note the emphasis on 'short' though. There was one very irritating mature-age student in some of my lectures who asked the longest, most detailed questions in the history of the world. By the end of the semester, every time he spoke up during a lecture, you could tell that everyone in the theatre was silently yelling at him to just SHUT. UP.

So generally, ppl are annoyed if you ask questions b/c they want to get out of there cause its dead boring?

Thanks tho, I'll stick to asking q's after the lecture.
Unless the lecturer asks his audience a question first, don't beat him to it.

It seems interesting, right now we're finding more info on Babylon mathematics.

We hit the topic of base numbers today, they used a sexagonal base (base 60) and used that for their mathematics.

They were also able to find square-roots in a pretty interesting way.

Say we want to find the square-root of 59.

They knew 59 E (49,64) so they said -

59 = 7*(7*59/7) = 7*(413/7)

and what they do is they add the two terms and find the average ie. (7+(413/7))/2 and keep doing this for a better approximation.

why ask questions when you can sit at the back of the lecture theatre and zone out for the entire lecture.
